International Summer School in Higher Education Studies. Dates of the event: June 8-14, 2014, St. Petersburg.

Event ended

The HSE Institute of Education in Moscow invites earlier career researchers, institutional researchers, and doctoral students, to apply to the upcoming

2nd INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL IN HIGHER EDUCATION STUDIES.

2014 Theme: “Who are the Students in Higher Education? Changing Roles, Changing Systems, Changing Lives

Applicants with backgrounds in all relevant fields (sociology, economics, political science, education, psychology, public administration, management, etc.) are encouraged to apply. The Summer School will take place on June 8-14, 2014 in St. Petersburg (Pushkin, Tsarskoe Selo).

The 2014 theme focuses on the changing roles of students in higher education – are they consumers, stakeholders, producers of knowledge or someone else? Which roles are students playing, and how varied and complex are those roles? These questions enable us to discuss a number of basic concepts in higher education research: higher education as a consumer good, as a public/private good, as a positional good, and the market model of higher education. This framework also provides a stimulating environment for different disciplinary approaches (sociology, economics, history, political science, pedagogics) to engage in analysis of higher education policy and current transformations in higher education worldwide.

Summer School faculty includes distinguished international researchers and experts in higher education with different professional backgrounds: Isak Froumin (Institute of Education, HSE), Simon Marginson (Institute of Education, University of London), Rajani Naidoo (School of Management, University of Bath), Pedro Teixeira (Research Centre on Higher Education Policy (CIPES) and Faculty of Economics, University of Porto),Jussi Välimaa (Finnish Institute for Educational Research, University of Jyvaskyla).

The working language of the summer school is English. Participants must have a strong command of spoken and written English.

The deadline for applications is March 20, 2014. To apply you will need to submit online

  1. An application form
  2. A 500-1000 word summary in English of any current research project dealing with higher education (you will be expected to present this at the Summer School), including the objectives of the study, its theoretical/conceptual framework, methodology/design, and significance.
