Lecture by Jan Tomasz Gross on ‘ 1939 in Western Ukraine and Western Belorussia – a Note on the Nature of Soviet Totalitarianism ’

On October 23, 2014 a research seminar of the Faculty of History will take place at the HSE. Jan Tomasz Gross will speak on ‘1939 in Western Ukraine and Western Belorussia – a Note on the Nature of Soviet Totalitarianism’.

Abstract:

In the lecture the author will present the story of imposition of Soviet rule in the area as narrated in several thousand individual testimonies of residents of Western Ukraine and Western Belorussia. He will attempt to draw inferences on the basis of this material about characteristics of social control under Stalinism.

Jan T. Gross studies modern Europe, focusing on comparative politics, totalitarian and authoritarian regimes, Soviet and East European politics, and the Holocaust. After growing up in Poland and attending Warsaw University, he immigrated to the United States in 1969 and earned a Ph.D. in sociology from Yale University (1975). He joined the Princeton History Department in 2003 after teaching at New York University, Emory, Yale, and universities in Paris, Vienna, and Krakow.
