Academic Seminar for Young Researchers in Management

On October 13-15, 2014 an Academic Seminar for Young Researchers in Management will take place at the HSE.

Prof. Igor Filatotchev (Cass Business School, City University London, UK)
Prof. Roger Strange (University of Sussex, UK)

The overall objective of this workshop is to help young management researchers to transfer their ideas into publishable academic papers. This workshop has a seminar format within which the participants provide a presentation/report on their research projects followed by Q&As from the audience and workshop convenors. During the workshop, the participants will be able to evaluate the significance of their research project, robustness of its theoretical underpinnings and relevance of the chosen research methodology.

Each participant will prepare a 1000 words summary (in English) of their research project that s/he will send to the workshop instructors for a preliminary review. At the workshop, the participants have 25-30 minutes for a Power Point presentation (in English) of her/his research followed by 15-20 minutes of Q&As. It is important to focus on key aspects of a particular project paying attention to the following issues:
  • positioning of research within the existing theoretical fields;
  • gaps in current knowledge that the project aims to address;
  • a succinct outline of research hypotheses and data sources;
  • research methodology and why it is appropriate within the project’s context;
future steps and research plans for the next 12 months.

Requirements:
  • Fluent spoken and written English (working language of the seminar is English)
To apply for the workshop please submit the following:
  1. Application form and motivational letter including the objectives of participation in the seminar
  2. Summary of the project / draft of the article. The summary should reflect the positioning of research in relation to existing theories, the knowledge gaps the research focuses on, a brief outine of research hypotheses and data sources and the description of chosen methodology. The summary should also include the plans for future research in the next 12 months.
  3. Digest of five most interesting / useful articles in international academic journals (category A), which reflect the project features.
All documents will be examined by the workshop instructors and the participants will be selected according to their merit.

The workshop’s programme will have the following structure:
Day 1
Theme A: “What are the main requirements of top management journals towards successful publications?” Case Study: Journal of Management Studies
Theme B: “Dealing with editorial comments throughout submission and review process.”
Day 2
The participants’ presentations of their research projects. Q&A and general discussion.
Day 3
Individual consultations focused on the specific papers of the participants.
The workshop concludes with a reflection on the main learning points and future publication plans of the participants.
