Event ended

On September 3 a research seminar from series ‘Culture Matters’ will take place at HSE. The event is organized by the International Laboratory for Socio-Cultural Research. Eugene Tartakovsky, PhD, Tel Aviv University (Israel), the School of Social Work, will give a talk on ‘Contemporary Russian Jewry: A Psychological Portrait’.

Abstract:

This presentation will be based on the results of the study of Russian Jewry conducted in the last year. In this study, “Russian Jews” were defined as all persons living in Russia and eligible to immigration to Israel under the Israeli Law of Return. About 1,200 people matching this definition and living in five cities in the European part of Russia completed the questionnaires. The study focused on the connections between value preferences, ethnic and national identities, social networks, and plans for emigration. In addition, value preferences of Russian Jews were compared with those of Russians. Finally, the Jews who returned to Russia after emigrating from the Former Soviet Union were compared with those who did not emigrate. The main goal of the presentation is to discuss the psychological mechanisms explaining the results obtained and the directions for further data analysis.
