First Meetings of the Russian G20 Presidency

On 11-13 December 2012, the first meetings of the Russian G20 Presidency were held in Moscow. They included the Think 20, Business 20 and Civil 20 Meetings, the inaugural G20 Sherpas’ Meeting and the ‘Fostering Economic Growth and Sustainability’ conference.

The Think 20 meeting, which focused on some of the key issues of the global economic agenda, was held on 11 December. The National Research University Higher School of Economics acted as one of the co-organizers of the meeting. At the meeting, representatives of major global think-tanks discussed the most important issues on the global economic agenda.and the main outcomes of the Think 20 Meeting were then presented to the G20 Sherpas Meeting on December 12 and passed on to Russia's G20 Sherpa Ksenia Yudaeva.

On 12 December, the ‘Mapping G20 Decisions Implementation: How G20 is Delivering on the Decisions Made’ report, prepared jointly by IORI HSE and the G20 Research Group at the University of Toronto, was presented at the G20 Sherpas’ Meeting in Moscow by IORI HSE Director Marina Larionova and G20 Research Group Co-director John Kirton. The report was also presented at the Civil 20 Meeting. Separate sections of the report were presented in more detail by the IORI HSE researchers during roundtables on the post 2015 development agenda, food security, financial inclusion and financial education, and labor and employment.

The first meeting of the G20 Civil Society Task Force on Equity took place as part of the Civil 20 conference. Participants looked at proposals for the thematic report ‘Sustained and Balanced Growth Requires Equitable Policies’ and discussed the possible methodology, structure and timeline.

On 13 December, a conference on ‘Fostering Economic Growth and Sustainability’, dedicated to the priorities and program of Russia’s G20 presidency, was held. The outcomes of the first events of the Russian presidency were reported at the conference, including the Think 20, Civil 20 and Business 20 meetings, which were held on December 11 and 12. There were also reports from Youth 20 and Labor 20 representatives on their plans for the Russian presidency. IORI HSE Director Marina Larionova presented the Civil 20 working program for 2013.

Exploring Fake News and Propaganda in Today’s World

This month, Dr. Oliver Boyd-Barrett, Professor Emeritus at Bowling Green State University in Ohio and California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, delivered at open lecture at HSE Moscow entitled ‘Fake News and Propaganda’. An expert in international media, war and propaganda, and media political economy, Dr. Boyd-Barrett is the author of a number of books, including ‘Western Mainstream Media and the Ukraine Crisis: A Study in Conflict Propaganda’ (2016) and ‘Media Imperialism’ (2014). Following his lecture, he spoke with the HSE News Service about the topic of fake news more broadly and about how people can protect themselves from it.

Stranger in Moscow: A Tale of German Student’s Adventures in Russia

Linda Moessler is a German student who spent her spring semester studying international relations at HSE Moscow. Despite political tensions and cultural differences, Linda managed to fit in greatly and enjoy her stay in Russia. Miss Moessler agreed to tell us about her experience as a foreign student at HSE. Her tale will surely be of great interest for those curious about how international students live in Russia.

In an article published by the Russian Business Newspaper (Rossiyskaya Biznes-Gazeta), Alexander Shokhin, who is the President of HSE, the President of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, and a member of the B20 International Business Advisory Council (IBAC), discussed the recommendations the business community has for G20 leaders ahead of the G20 Summit in Turkey.

Russia and China Becoming Closer

On July 3-10, the IV International Russian-Chinese Summer School on International Relations, ‘Space and Time in the Eurasian Era,’ took place in Moscow. The event was organized by the HSE and East China Normal University. A total of 15 Russian and 12 Chinese students are taking part in the summer school. The summer school, whose working language is English, is intended for undergraduate and graduate students from Russia and China that are interested in international relations.

On the Fast Track at Aix-Marseille School of Economics

Vera Danilina, Senior Lecturer in the Department of World Economy (Faculty of World Economy and International Affairs), spoke recently about her experience as a participant in the Fast Track programme at the Aix-Marseille School of Economics (AMSE, Aix-Marseille University) in France.

An Excellent Platform for Academic Debate and Public Education

Dr. Marek Dabrowski, CASE Fellow at the CASE — Center for Social and Economic Research in Warsaw, Poland, has participated in every HSE April Conference since 2001, missing just the 2000 inaugural event.  A professor with decades of experience in the field of economics, Dr. Dabrowski’s current areas of expertise range from monetary and fiscal policies and political economies in transition to perspectives on European integration and European Neighborhood Policy.
