HSE Recognized by IIE Heiskell Awards for 'Internationalizing the Campus'

The Higher School of Economics was recognized by the Institute of International Education (IIE) for its internationalization initiatives and given honorable mention for the Andrew Heiskell Award for Internationalizing the Campus. HSE is the first Russian university to be named in the 14-year history of the awards.

The IIE Heiskell Awards were created in 2001 to honor the most outstanding activities in international higher education. Named after Andrew Heiskell, a former chairman of Time Inc. and longtime member of IIE’s Board of Trustees, the awards will be presented on March 20, 2015, in New York City, as part of IIE’s annual Best Practices in Internationalization Conference. During the event, Sergei Erofeev, HSE’s Vice Rector for Internationalization, will speak on a panel with other leaders from award-winning campuses and specifically discuss proven strategies for young universities.

HSE was chosen for recognition by a selection committee comprising international higher education experts from US institutions. The university’s innovative efforts bring international students and faculty to campus and offer comprehensive service centers to support their needs both at and outside the university. With students from more than 60 countries and nearly 100 internationally-hired full-time faculty members, HSE is leader in Russia in internationalizing higher education. HSE is also participating in IIE’s Generation Study Abroad initiative, and has pledged to quadruple the number of students from the US at the university by 2018.

Vice Rector of HSE, Sergei Erofeev, stressed that ‘it is a great honor for HSE to be among the outstanding universities recognized by IIE, and especially for it to be the first Russian institution named. We believe our international activity is a key element of the university’s identity, and it is something that absolutely sets HSE apart from other institutions in the country. Our work has only started, and we are committed to taking every step to continue to transform HSE into a truly global university.’
