‘Nature and the System’ Student Exhibition Opens at Myasnitskaya 11

On November 28, an exhibition of works by second-year students in the HSE School of Design – ‘Nature and the System’ – opened in honour of the Higher School of Economics’ anniversary. In their works, students were to reflect the relationship between these two categories.

Fourteen students took part in this team project, which required two months of preparation. According to Sergey Kuzhavsky, Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Communications, Media and Design and the group’s curator, one of the project’s main objectives was to teach students to move beyond the flat sheet to three-dimensional objects. Students used putty to paint bas-relief on plywood, then sculpted them from modelling clay, made silicone molds and cast them in plaster.

‘Anything can be made from clay, but putty is a very unyielding material – fluid and very difficult to work with,’ said Sergey Kuzhavsky. ‘But this material is what creates a “natural” feeling when working with it.’

In completing the project, students learned to present their design work, photographing fragments of reliefs and creating different compositions – abstract, symmetrical, and fine-grained – with the help of a computer. These photos serve as the basis for the exhibition.

‘It was a learning exercise for future designers, but the students produced quite professional results,’ said Kuzhavsky. ‘Their work could easily be presented at a full-fledged exhibition.’

‘Nature and the System’ will be on permanent display at Professors’ Hall, which is located in the Higher School of Economics wing at Myasnitskaya 11.
