Charity Drive at HSE during Good Deed Month
On March 11, 2017, HSE will host the ‘Heroes Among Us’ charity festival. The month leading up to it is Good Deed Month, organized by the Open Your Eyes student project. People are encouraged to use this month to do good. Check out the ideas below – having a big positive impact doesn’t always mean putting a lot of effort in.
1. Eat pancakes and make donations
Charity Maslenitsa will be celebrated on February 20 and 21 at HSE academic buildings, and on February 26 at the Dubki dormitory. For a small donation, guests will be treated to some delicious pancakes. All the money will be spent on purchasing medical equipment and medicines for The Lighthouse children’s hospice*.

2. Donate blood
HSE students, lecturers, and even security officers at HSE buildings all donate blood regularly. For example, they donated 72.5 liters of blood at a recent Donor Day.
The upcoming initiative is organized together with the Russian Federal Medical Biological Agency (FMBA) Blood Service.
More information on the requirements for the donors is available here (in Russian). International students and faculty can also participate but if they don't speak Russian, they need to be accompanied by an interpreter. It is necessary to present one's passport.
Time: February 22, 9.00 – 11.30. After giving blood, you’ll be able to have a rest and eat some chocolate with sweet tea to restore your energy.

3. Collect presents for senior citizens
HSE and the Joy of Old Age (Starost' v Radost') foundation will collect gifts for people living at a care facility for seniors in Noginsk. These will be presents for the holidays celebrated in Russia on February 23 (Defender of the Fatherland Day – often called ‘men’s day’) and March 8 (Women’s Day).
The gifts will include things for everyday comfort, souvenirs, and sweets.
Lists of things needed are available here (in Russian). They include towels, cleaning and hygiene products, blenders, various arts and crafts kits (colouring books, play-doh, engravings, applications, etc), chess, checkers, bingo, dominoes, batter-powered radios, calendars, pictures. Sweets (suitable for people of old age) and tea (in teabags) are also welcome.
Time: March 1 and 2, 10.30 am – 6.00 pm
Venue: HSE buildings on Myasnitskaya, Kirpichnaya, Shabolovka, Tallinskaya, Maly Tryohksvyatitelsky Pereulok, and Bolshoy Kharitonievsky Pereulok.
*The Lighthouse is a private medical charity institution for children with incurable diseases. The hospice isn’t funded by the state and exists on charity donations made by thousands of people. Over 500 children are looked after by The Lighthouse today. The children’s hospice takes care of the quality of living of the child and their whole family. Its staff don’t cure the main disease and don’t do rehabilitation, but they treat the symptoms and provide conditions needed for the child and their family to live as a full, active, and normal life as possible. The hospice programme includes games, holidays, and suburban camps. The hospice makes children’s dreams come true, takes part of the load off the parents, and supports the family after their loss.

Service Learning Programme Launched at Russia’s Universities
On September 5th, which is the International Day of Charity, the Service Learning programme was launched at many of the country’s universities. HSE University hosted a meeting with deputy deans and faculty project managers, followed by a large NGO fair, where both students and HSE University staff got to know more about partner NGOs and planned further joint projects.
‘Volunteering Is in Every Healthcare Worker’s Blood’
From August 7 to 9, the annual All-Russian Forum of Medical Volunteers took place at HSE University’s Cultural Centre. The event was held for the seventh year in a row. This year, 300 medical volunteers from all over Russia took part.

Students of the Bachelor's programme in Business Administration at HSE Nizhny Novgorod are implementing ‘The World Through the Eyes of the Blind’ public initiative as part of a project seminar. The students are holding exhibitions and workshops to raise funds through the crowdfunding platform Planeta.ru in order to install a radio system in a boarding school for blind and visually impaired students and to draw attention to the problems of people with visual disabilities.

The Green HSE student organisation recently held the ‘Green Conversation’ festival at the Cultural Centre on Pokrovsky Bulvar. At the event, participants discussed the planet’s main ecological problems and the steps required to start building a green future today.

HSE University is known for its active extracurricular life. There are many student organisations at the university, so everyone can find something for themselves. Anna Lulikyan, fourth-year bachelor student in Sociology, told the HSE News Service about the Best Buddies HSE volunteer club.
Road of Kindness: HSE University Students to Hold Charity Run in Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod
On September 4, the Road of Kindness charity run will take place in Gorky Park. The event is timed to coincide with the 30th anniversary of HSE University, and was organised by the university’s students in cooperation with the Student Initiative Support Centre and the Centre for Leadership and Volunteer Work. The event is also being held in Nizhny Novgorod.
Why Volunteers Keep Coming Back
HSE University researchers together with colleagues from Erasmus University in Rotterdam and the University of Pennsylvania examined the determinants of episodic volunteer satisfaction and its impact on the motivation to continue volunteering.
‘We Are Trying to Change Attitudes Towards Homelessness’
HSE University graduates and the Nochlezhka charity organisation have launched a social media project called ‘Gde-to ryadom’ (‘Somewhere Nearby’) about volunteering to help homeless people. The project offers a look at volunteer work from various perspectives through personal stories, expert opinions, and interactive cases.
