Svetlana Strinyuk: ‘Our idea of national identity is changing in today’s world’

HSE Perm’s Associate Professor in the Department of Foreign Languages Svetlana Strinyuk gave a lecture on the influence of Modernism on contemporary Irish literature at the annual conference of the European Society for the Study of English (ESSE).
The conference is the main academic event in English Literature research, where participants can present their work to a wide circle of European researchers. This year it took place in Slovakia at the Pavol Jozef Safarik University. Svetlana Strinyuk’s paper provoked a lot of interest and a lively discussion.
Svetlana believes that, ‘In today’s world, active migration and general cultural processes are changing the way we understand national identity and literature is subtly responding to these changes’. In her research Associate Professor Strinyuk looked at the influence of the modernist tradition (both as a way of understanding the world and as a technique) in the Irish writer Seamus Dean’s novel Reading in the Dark. Strinyuk’s conclusions are based on the linguistic and textual means of expressing identity - national, religious, etc. and as she points out, ‘Modernism and particularly the works of James Joyce have had an enormous influence on contemporary Irish literature’.
