Joint Brainstorming by International Researchers

A week-long training methodological workshop 'Economic and Social Changes: values effects across Eurasia' on advanced quantitative methods in comparative studies took place in April. The workshop was jointly organized by the Eurasia Business and Economics Society (EBES), Turkey, and HSE's Laboratory for Comparative Social Rsearch. The workshop included presentations by the members of LCSR and EBES, series of practical workshops, as well as reports of the participants.

The EBES presentation was conducted by Professor Mehmet Bilgin, Vice President of the Society. EBES is an organization that promotes the development of research in the field of economics, finance and business around the world. Moreover, the Society is a publisher of three journals which are relevant for the scientists working in the field of economics, finance and related disciplines. These journals are the Eurasian Economic ReviewEurasian Business Review and EBES Anthology. EBES also organizes regular international conferences, the nearest of which will be held in Istanbul in May 2015. A conference in Russia is scheduled for 2016-2017.

First master class was conducted by Professor Eduard Ponarin, director of the LCSR (HSE - St. Petersburg). The theme of the master class was 'Multilevel modeling in social science'. The lectures on multilevel models have already been preformed at weekly seminars and Summer Schools, which the Laboratory holds every year. Such a long interest in this methodological framework can be explained by its complexity and multiple possibilities for usage. Professor Ponarin not only described the methodological procedures but also shared the latest results of their joint research with Professor Ronald Inglehart, scientific supervisor of LCSR. The prominent authors prepare for publishing the material.

The next master class was guided by Professor Hermann Duelmer (University of Cologne, Germany), external expert of the LCSR`s research network. Professor Duelmer presented material on methodologies of Factorial Design. Theoretical narrative was especially useful for future participants of the LCSR Summer School - 2015 'Introduction to Factorial Design and Data Visualization with R', which will be held from July 25 to August 3, 2015, Moscow.

Roberto Foa (Harvard University, USA), associate researcher of LCSR, held two sessions on the principles of data visualization in the social sciences and practical mapping using geographic information system (GIS).

Boris Sokolov, research fellow of LCSR (HSE - St. Petersburg), finished the workshop with master classes on introduction to Bayesian statistics.

During the five days workshop, participants had an excellent opportunity to consult with the professors. The consultations were held in small groups or individually, which contributed to the development of projects and publications of young LCSR`s researches.

Offsite events of the Laboratory should not be considered as only a meeting with associate members of the scientific network, which unites the researches from different universities and research organizations around the world. Such workshops should be also viewed as the opportunity to freely exchange ideas within the laboratory, since most of the time LCSR`s St Petersburg and Moscow offices communicate remotely. The outdoor meetings allows the laboratory to keep the group spirit and organize productive brain storms. The current workshop was saturated with a lot of fresh ideas and all the participants were actively involved in the discussion of various topics.

The presentations of the participants are available online. Please, find more information about the workshop, and download the materials on master classes and performances follow the link.
