17.6%

of retirement age men in Russia are involved in any kind of exercise or sports. Among women, 16.8% lead an active lifestyle.

Practice shows that older people who are involved in physical exercise and sports live longer and get sick less often. The WHO estimates that every dollar spent on promoting physical activity allows the healthcare system to save $3.20 in the future due to reduced costs associated with the provision of medical care.

These data are presented in an article by Natalia Khorkina, Research Fellow at the HSE Laboratory of Public Sector Economic Research, and Anna Filippova, a student of HSE’s Faculty of Economic Sciences, entitled ‘Physical Activity among Elderly People as an Object of State Control’.
