Dirk Meissner: ‘An Element of Trust Is Essential for an Individual’s Professional Performance and Organisational Knowledge Production’

Cyber attacks exploit flaws in software, human error or misplaced trust. The end goal is to access information, money or to disrupt an organisation. To keep a step ahead of these criminals requires the organisation to have ‘strategic cyber-foresight’, advise Bruno Fischer of the University of Campinas, and Dirk Meissner, of HSE University Moscow. Researchers commented for the R&D Today on the highlights of their Guest Editorial in a Special Section for the IEEE, Transactions on Engineering Management, VOL. 69, NO. 6, DECEMBER 2022, they have curated, that covers cybersecurity.

HSE ISSEK’s Newly Accredited Master’s in Management: ‘It’s Challenging, but It Pays Off in the End’

In December 2021, the HSE ISSEK English-language Master’s programme in Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation became one of three HSE University management programmes to receive European accreditation by the European Foundation for Management Development. We spoke to Dirk Meissner, the academic supervisor of the programme, about the significance of European accreditation, the programme’s unique opportunities for students, and student engagement in research.

Congratulations to HSE Distinguished Professor Dirk Meissner on the 50th Anniversary

Professor Dirk Meissner has been working at the HSE Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge since 2011. He is the head of International Laboratory for Economics of Innovation, academic supervisor of Master’s Programme ‘Governance of Science, Technology and Innovation’, coordinator of book series ‘Science, Technology and Innovation Studies’ published jointly with Springer and a number of HSE pre-prints in the field of STI. During the ten years of his work at the University, Professor Meissner made a considerable contribution to developing scientific and educational potential of the HSE University in raising its international reputation in these areas. We have the greatest respect for our esteemed colleague and congratulate him on this anniversary!

Science and Technology Trends in International Dialogue

Domestic and foreign policies of leading countries reveal an ever more outstanding science and technology agenda. The participants of the XI International Academic Conference ‘Foresight and Science, Technology and Innovation Policy’, conducted on October 15–25, 2021, reviewed new aspects of doing joint R&D projects that the countries have considered and ways of securing competitive advantages of national science through strengthening ties with both businesses and authorities and engaging a wider audience.

Building Bridges between Knowledge and Society and Making Policy More Effective

On December 4, the International Advisory Board of the Institute for Statistical Studies and Economics of Knowledge of HSE University met for its annual meeting. It was an anniversary event, as was the X Foresight Conference that preceded it. Largely thanks to the online format, the assembled board was the most representative of the field in its history. Pandemic Bolstered Ties between Science and Society

The sector of science, technology and innovation (STI) is even more nonlinear and complex than the world behind the looking glass from the Lewis Carroll’s story. For companies and countries wishing to claim or secure leadership, it is no longer enough to simply run all guns blazing to stay in the competition over global chains, or even run twice as fast to occupy higher positions. Which strategies lead to success, which skillsets are required for effective management in STI, what trends and metrics should be taken into account, all this was discussed by the members of X International Academic Conference in Foresight and STI on the wide spectrum of county cases and industries, paying special attention to the context of COVID-19.

The experts outlined the potential for cooperation in the scope of S&T research projects and educational programmes.

Welt und Wissenschaft: Growing Strong with a Dedicated Community

If you are interested in attending a conference at HSE, there is always something going on. In fact, one of the University’s conferences aimed at young researchers is quite special, as it held neither in Russian nor in English, but in German. Less than half a month apart from HSE’s April Conference, the international conference Welt und Wissenschaft (‘World and Science’) was held for the 4th time.
