Autumn School “Population and Health 2023”

From October 16 to 20, the International Laboratory for Population and Health of HSE University, Human Capital Multidisciplinary Research Center and the Strategic Project «National Centre of Science, Technology and Socio-Economic Foresight» held the Autumn School “Population and Health 2023”. More than 20 students, graduate students and young scientists took part in the school. Participants became familiar with approaches to measuring health, mortality data, measures of inequality and current studies, and gained practical experience in calculating various indicators in statistical software R.

On December 2, at the seminar "Modern Demography", Ph.D., Head of the International Laboratory for Population and Health, Evgeny Andreev, presented a report on interregional differences in mortality in Russia in 2021.

Experts on the Consequences of COVID-19: The Pandemic Gives Impetus to Science and Technology

TheHuman Capital Multidisciplinary Research Centre and HSE University, in cooperation with the World Bank, held the conference ‘New Challenges of Demographic, Epidemiological and Medical-Technological Development: Search for New Models of Healthcare Development.’ The participants discussed whether the healthcare system was prepared to face the pandemic, how the latter affected lifespans and excess mortality rates, whether we can trust statistics, and what we should do to see ‘the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel.’     

Demography and Social Policy: First Readings in Memory of A.G. Vishnevsky Held at HSE University

The Human Capital Multidisciplinary Research Center, together with the Vishnevsky Institute of Demography and the International Laboratory for Population and Health, organized the first demographic readings in memory of HSE University Professor Anatoly Vishnevsky, the first director of the Institute. The experts in attendance discussed a wide range of topics, including family policy, how to improve the conditions of low-income people, and how to correct market and employment setbacks.

Life with COVID: ‘The Beast Is Dangerous and Needs to Be Watched’

Researchers have yet to evaluate the entire impact of COVID on mortality. However, it is now possible to discuss the first results of some initial studies. The HSE International Laboratory for Population and Health held a webinar ‘The First Year of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Russia (April 2020—March 2021)’. Although the Russian total mortality rate increased during that period, it was Slovakia, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, and Poland that topped the list. The lowest growth in the mortality rate was observed in South Korea. Meanwhile, researchers have failed to detect a lockdown-induced baby boom anywhere in the world.

In a study, ‘How Many Deaths from COVID-19 Were Avoided by Russian Society’, experts from HSE University found that the restrictive measures taken by the Russian government and its citizens to combat the spread of the virus saved the lives of tens of thousands of Russians.

The 9th scientific seminar ‘Modern demography’ was held on the 29th of March. Evgeniy M. Andreev, PhD, laboratory head of the International laboratory for population and health NRU HSE, and Vladimir M. Shkolnikov, PhD, academic supervisor of the International laboratory for population and health NRU HSE, the research scientist at the Laboratory of demographic data of Max Planck Institute for demographic research, presented a paper "Relationship between mortality rates and economic development in the regions of Russia".

Seminar "Algorithm for decomposition of differences between two aggregated demographic measures"

The second seminar ‘Modern demography’ of the International laboratory for population and health NRU HSE, was held on 22nd of March. Evgeny M. Andreev, head of the дaboratory, presented the decomposition method and demonstrated some examples of its application for demographic and public health analysis.

A meeting of the Demographic group of the Central house of scientists of the RAS took place on the 27th of February in the Central House of Scientists of the RAS, where Evgeny M. Andreev, head of the International laboratory for population and health of NRU HSE, presented a paper ‘Demographic effect of anti-alcohol policy measures in Russia’.

New International Laboratories Opening up at HSE

On December 23, 2016, the HSE Academic Council approved the creation of four new laboratories: the International Laboratory for the Study of Russian and European Intellectual Dialogue, the International Laboratory for Population and Health Studies, the International Laboratory of Deep Learning and Bayesian Methods, and the International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-scale Analysis.
