Открытая лекция доктора Вернера Биндера «Cultural Mechanisms — Meaning-based Explanations in Cultural Sociology»

6 февраля в 18.00 состоится открытая лекция доктора Вернера Биндера (Dr. Werner Binder), организованная Институтом образования НИУ ВШЭ.

Лекция будет посвященную развитию способов объяснения социального действия через интерпретацию его смыслов. Опираясь на работы Карла Мангейма, Джона Серля и нескольких других исследователей, доктор Вернер Биндер предложит способ объяснения смыслов действия с точки зрения культурсоциологии. Этот способ позволяет говорить не только об объективных (знаках) и субъективных (убеждения, ощущения) смыслах действия, но и о культурных смыслах, и тем самым дает доступ к пониманию логики культуры. 

"Cultural sociologists are generally interested in meaning-based explanations of action. Following Weber’s introductory remarks in Economy and Society, many interpretative sociologists but also analytical sociologists (e.g. Hedström 2005) treat subjective meanings of actors (e.g. desires and beliefs) as the baseline for sociological explanations. Although this is a legitimate explanatory strategy, we have to keep in mind that this particular “stopping rule” is a convention that paints an incomplete picture of action. Drawing on Mannheim’s early sociological work, we can distinguish between three levels of meaning and interpretation: The level of objective meanings (e.g. signs), the level of subjective meanings (e.g. beliefs, feelings, motives) and the level of cultural meanings (e.g. habitus or life-form). Cultural sociological explanations do not stop at the surface level of conventional signs and expressive intentions and, but aim to uncover a deep cultural logic. The surface has to be interpreted as manifestation of a deep structure, whereas the deep structure is only accessible through the interpretation of the surface. Following Searle (2005), we can understand this structure as a “cultural background” composed of mental habits, classification systems, symbolic binaries, narratives and metaphors that constitutes intentional acts and renders them meaningful".
