Мероприятие завершено

22 октября в 18.10 состоится научно-исследовательский семинар, организованный кафедрой методов сбора и анализа социологической информации департамента социологии факультета социальных наук НИУ ВШЭ.

Тема семинара: «Studying migrants homes: Ethics, Participatory Ethnography and Visual Research».

Докладчик: Anna Pechurina (PhD,The School of Social, Psychological and Communication Sciences,Leeds Beckett University).

Using the example of the study into Russian immigrants’ homes in the UK that involves a combination of researcher and participant generated verbal narratives and visual images of private domestic spaces the presentation will address the questions of researcher’s social position in the studied community and the subsequent analysis of data. The increasing popularity of participatory methods that involve a strong element of visual research calls for even greater attention to the ethical issues that surround it.

There have been considerable methodological literature on participatory home ethnography including studies of homes and personal lives which highlighted the importance of getting closer to the participants and their own worlds, to let them express sensations and interpretations of the meanings of their experiences “in their own words”. The idea of demonstrating is one of the key characteristics of home interview and for this reason it is important to clarify to whom, by whom, and in what way the home is (re)presented. Collaborating with the research subjects and even being guided by them can help produce rich data, but how much of participants’ authorship is enough? One of the key tasks of the researcher in the study, which involves participatory element and co-production of knowledge is how to find the balance between the researcher’s power to lead the research methodologically and participants’ rights to autonomy and possibility to have a ‘voice’ (Giordano et al 2007: 265).

The presentation aims to demonstrate the complex character of decision making process that occurs when such negotiations take place and will discuss related practical issues and implications of participatory home ethnography. I will start with describing the research methodology in more detail and discuss some issues related to the selection of participants, the negotiation of access, and the importance of anonymity when researching the actual community. A number of case studies will be used to illustrate my argument. In new book, ‘Material Cultures, Migrations, and Identities’, Anna analyses the ways in which Russian-speaking migrants have set up their new homes abroad using material possessions from their Russian motherland to link people, places and memories together.
