Trade policy in Russia: Framework and trends

 

 

(course outline)

 

 

 

 

 

 

Since the beginning of economic transformation, trade policy in Russia was characterized by a shaky balance between liberal and protectionist measures. The course addresses major economic and political economy challenges facing Russian trade policy on the eve of the WTO accession. Problems to be addressed are as follows:

 

 

 

· Structure and dynamics of Russian foreign trade, 1998-2005;

 

 

 

· Import and export regulation: Trends, economic rationale, and political economy determinants;

 

 

 

· The role of preferential trade agreements and economic partnership agreements in Russian trade policy;

 

 

 

· Political economy of the WTO accession: Conflicting interests and negotiation perspectives.
