Memo for international students who require a visa to enter Russia

*All countries other than Uzbekistan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Ukraine, Azerbaijan

Step 1. How do I register my visa?

Every foreign passport holder must obtain registration within 7 working days after arrival.

Apply for the registration within 3 days after your arrival to Russia. If you stay at the HSE students dormitory the administrator will do it for you.

For that, present the following documents:

  • your passport (ID page + visa)
  • migration card

If you are not staying at the dormitory, please e-mail scanned copies of the documents to the Visa&Registration Unit at visa-registration@hse.ru.

REMINDER: Every time you leave Russia and come back you need to obtain a migration card and re-apply for registration.

You must have the original registration with you at all times.

Keep the migration card close. Do not lose it. These documents are to be presented at the passport control when you leave.

Every time you re-enter Russia you will receive a new migration card.

If you lose your migration card, you will need to immediately restore it. Check for the procedure.

Step 2. How do I extend my visa and registration?

Single-entry visa (what you have to know)

Given to you by a Russian embassy/consulate in your country of residence. Valid for 90 days only. You can enter Russia only once.

Multiple-entry visa (what you must apply for)

Replaces the single-entry visa. Issued for the length of maximum 1 year. You can leave and re-enter Russia as many times as you need. Must be applied for no later than 45 calendar days before the single-entry visa expires.

Pls,  note that the foreign national’s current single-entry visa shall not be cancelled and the starting date on the new (extended) visa is the day following the expiry date on his/her current visa.

To apply for the multiple-entry visa the following documents are required:

  • passport (original + copy of ID page and visa page);
  • migration card (original  + copy);
  • registration slip (original + 2 copies);
  • 1 photo 3,5 x 4,5 (in color)
  • visa extension fee (1600 rubles)
  • certificate confirming that you are a HSE student (pick it up from your programme manager or exchange coordinator)
  • copy of your quota referral (quota degree students, pick up from programme manager) or order of enrollment (exchange students, pick up from exchange coordinator)
  • copy of your contract (visiting and fee-paying degree students)

Issuance of the multiple-entry visa usually takes 45 calendar days.

When the visa is issued by the Migration Service,  the Visa&Registration Unit will notify you to your HSE e-mail. You will need to bring your passport to the Visa&Registration Unit, leave it there for 1-2 days for it to be taken to the Migration Service and for the visa to be put in, and then pick up the passport.

COPY OF THE PASSPORT

You can request a stamped copy of your passport from the Visa&Registration Unit in order to carry it with you instead of the original. Keep the original passport in a safe place.
