Аннотация

“Material culture and art of Southeast Asia” is a course that is taught to the third year students of the educational program "Languages and Literature of Southeast Asia". This course incorporates both the responsibilities of familiarizing students with the history and evolution of Southeast Asian peoples’ material culture and the introduction of methodologies of a typological approach in exploration of material culture. The goal of the discipline is to provide understanding of specificity of Southeast Asian material culture, its connection with spiritual world and social life of region’s population, as well as its place among other Oriental cultures. In addition, the course introduces information on visual arts of Southeast Asia (including architecture, religious art, fine art and crafts) with an emphasis on Vietnam. In general, it targets to provide students with skills to analyze and compare cultural phenomena and to evoke their interest to independent research of particular fragment from rich cultural diversity in material life of Southeast Asian peoples. The course is conducted entirely in English.

  • Introduction to the distinctive features of the Southeast Asian material culture in relation of its synchronous fragments with diachronic analysis, broadening of students’ perspectives on traditions and cultural values of the countries of the studied languages. Formation of a notion about the specificity of the material and spiritual culture of Southeast Asia due to numerous and diverse cultural contacts and interactions. Introduction of students to the origins and development of material and artistic culture in Southeast Asia and Vietnam in connection with broader socio-historical processes (with periods of development, with the formation of crafts, with various trends, forms and genres of fine art). On the basis of acquired knowledge, training in independent analysis of artistic processes, the evolution of material culture, individual types, genres, works of art, as well as of certain artists’ creative work.

  • - Ability to describe and analyze specific features of traditional buildings.
  • - Knowledge of basic terms, definitions, concepts and theories in the field of material and spiritual culture.
  • - Knowledge of socio-spiritual aspects of the material units of Vietnamese culture: house-altar-village.
  • - Knowledge of the main characteristics of the art types and genres in Southeast Asia and Vietnam
  • - Knowledge of the main characteristics of the new art types and genres in Southeast Asia and Vietnam and main figures of contemporary art in the region.
  • - Knowledge of the main features of the material culture of the peoples inhabiting Southeast Asia
  • - Knowledge of the main historical architectural sites of the Hindu-Buddhist civilization
  • - Knowledge of the main works on the history of culture and art of Southeast Asia and Vietnam and on the existing concepts of the region’s culture evolution
  • - Knowledge of the principal crafts of SEA and Vietnam, awareness of their place in the world cultural heritage.
  • - Possessing skills of a systematic and typological approach while analyzing and outlining the processes of development of material culture and fine arts.
  • - Proficiency in reading and analyzing scientific publications on culture and art (articles in special journals and monographs, publications in foreign languages)
  • - Skills to distinguish Hindu’s and Buddhist’s’ influences in traditional architecture of Southeast Asia
  • - The ability to analyze contemporary art works, their conceptual charge and social engagement
  • - The ability to apply gained knowledge to the examination of art monuments, specific pieces of art, a certain artist's works, and the description of museum and private collections
  • - The ability to identify Chinese influences in Vietnamese spiritual and material culture and visual arts
  • - The ability to use the acquired knowledge in identifying particularities of specific craft objects of Vietnamese material culture, and revealing their uniqueness in the frames of the region’s culture
  • - The ability to use the acquired knowledge in reviewing specific relationship of spiritual culture and objects of material culture in Southeast Asia
  • Knowledge of the historical periods of culture development in Southeast Asia and Vietnam
