Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course will give an overview of what corporate investment decisions involve. It will provide tools and techniques for an investment projects appraisal as well as for managing portfolios of investment projects. During the course, students will learn how to deal with risks associated with corporate investment decisions and how they affect project valuations. The course will also give an idea of the function of the capital market from the corporate investment decisions point of view.

  • Apply tools for investment projects appraisal and assess investment projects’ attractiveness with several techniques,
  • · Estimate investment decisions with respect to corporate value,
  • · Interpret mechanisms of the investment risk management and demonstrate knowledge of risk management practices in the context of international investment management,
  • Demonstrate knowledge in short- and long-term corporate financial decisions, taking into consideration capital structure, cost of capital, and working capital management.

  • Fundamentals of investment analysis
    Basics of financial arithmetic: valuation principles, time-value of money, present and future values.
  • Investment decisions and strategies
    Investment appraisal methods, project evaluation, cash flows, and applications of profitability ratios
  • Investment risks and return
    Types of investment risk, risk identification and measurement, investment portfolios, risk-premiums
  • Short-term financial decisions
    Risk and treasury management, working capital and asset management, short-term financing choices
  • Long-term financial decisions
    Equity capital, debt financing, corporate capital structure and cost of capital, dividend payout policies
  • Corporate value
    Valuation methods, shareholder value analysis, definition and valuation of (real) options, value-based management
  • International investment management
    Foreign currency risk management, foreign market entry strategies, political and country risks
