Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course “History of International Relations, XX century” is aimed for the students who mastered the basics of World History of New and Modern Period. They are supposed to compare now the main sources and the nature of international tension that characterized the pre-First World War as well as the pre-Second World War periods. This will be carried out through the analyses of main ideological, political, economic and cultural trends both of international and regional scale. The personal influence over the system of International Relations by outstanding figures of the XX century historical scene will be analyzed All this will enable to trace the true reasons for the start of the Cold War straight after the common victory in WW-II. The developments of the second half of the XX-th century will be studied through the prism of UN formation, creation of bi-polar system, decolonization process, the establishment of new actors for the system of international relations. All this will bring us closer to the understanding of main ideas and comprehensive theory of international relations created by modern foreign politics exercised by numerous sovereign states.

  • Students gain knowledge of the history of International Relations in the XX-th century. This knowledge will serve as a foundation for further study of the theory of international relations as well as a tool for understanding modern foreign policy exercised by numerous states
  • Students learn to think critically and comparatively about the main trends in international relations. They are able to understand and identify the true factors of changing the strategic domestic and foreign guidelines
  • Students are able to use their knowledge and critical thinking abilities to the most important issues of foreign and domestic policy of numerous countries in the field of national security at the present stage, based on the history of these problems
  • Students acquire a perspective on history and an understanding of the factors that shape international relations
  • Students display knowledge about the origins and nature of contemporary issues and develop a foundation for a future comparative understanding
  • Students think and speak critically about, the most important provisions of international instruments, the foundations of international law regulating the activities in the field of international relations in the society as well as between society and natural environment in their historical contexts

  • Introduction: The creation of a multipolar world structure resulting from the First World War
    understanding of the main results of the First World War and the formation of centers of power
  • Novelties introduced by Treaty of Versailles and League of Nations into the system of International Relations
    new international legal approaches developed at the Paris Peace Conference to analyze a specific regional situation. Charter of the League of Nations / Treaty of Versailles, elective articles
  • Post-war settlement in Eastern Asia and creation of Versailles- Washington Order
    understanding of the additions made to the operation of the system of international relations system of the Washington Conference in 1921. Decisions and agreements reached the Washington Conference 1921
  • The impact of the World economic crisis onto Versailles- Washington Order
    an idea of the extent, features of the course and the results of the global economic crisis of 1929-1933 - Work with a map and chronological tables
  • Crisis of Versailles- Washington Order: ideological and regional specifics in the second half of 1930

    This is an oral exam.The exam is held on the Zoom platform (https://zoom.us/j/6336343977?pwd=eEhlVEhJcTY3TWxuTExkSFU3cFBWZz09). Students need to join the exam ten minutes before the start. The student's computer must meet the requirements: a working camera and microphone, guarantee of power supply. To participate in the exam, the student is obliged: to put their photo on the avatar, turn on the camera, and microphone. During the exam, students are forbidden to: turn off the camera, and microphone. During the exam, students are allowed: to use any information resources. A short-term communication disruption during the exam is considered a communication disruption of less than 10 minutes. Long-term communication disruption during the exam is considered a communication disruption for more than 10 minutes. In the case of long-term communication disruption, the student cannot continue the exam. The retake procedure involves the use of more complicated tasks.
