Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is designed to provide practical skills and knowledge on the vocabulary and grammar of the Indonesian and Malay languages to the students who have never previously learned Indonesian and Malay. At the same time, the course provides students with the opportunities to develop a sufficient competency in Indonesian and Malay and to use it in a variety of ways to develop their communication skills. Students are also expected to acquire basic speaking and listening comprehension skills, a considerable body of basic grammar, reading and writing skills within the topics covered in class.

  • communicative competence – developing communicative skills through speaking, listening, reading and writing in communicative scenarios and topics chosen for the course
  • language competence – learning new language units (orthographic, phonetic, lexical, grammar) related to communicative scenarios and topics of the course;
  • learning about language phenomena in the foreign language, about various ways of expressing ideas using the native and foreign languages;
  • socio-cultural competence – introducing students to the culture, traditions, and realia of the country whose language they are learning; developing skills of presenting their country and its culture when communicating with foreigners
  • cognitive competence – developing general and special academic skills; familiarizing students with available ways of autonomous learning of a foreign language and culture, ICT included.

  • Make inference and predictions about spoke the discourse

  • Use vocabulary appropriately
  • Use grammatical structure appropriately;
  • Introduce itself, make a request, give advice, make a suggestion, express agreement/disagreement and make an offer;
  • Communicate on daily topics such as daily routines, description of surrounding things, ordering food, shopping, traveling, asking directions, etc.
  • Demonstrate and produce some features of spoken Indonesian and Malay languages: sentence stress, intonation on sentence and question.
  • Use grammatical structure accurately
  • Compose both simple and complex sentences and texts
  • Write well-developed and logical essays that utilized course readings and topics
  • Reading: Skim for the main idea;
  • Reading: Scan for details;
  • Summarize and paraphrase information in the text;
  • Deduce meaning from the context.

  • Indonesian and Malay Alphabet & Pronunciation
    Indonesian and Malay Alphabet & Pronunciation; consonants and vowel pronunciation/ Number of the letter, reading rules. Basic greetings
  • Greetings
    Vocabulary - Greetings, countries name, professions, major; objects, room facilities. Speaking skills - Introducing yourself (name, nationality, profession. college major); expressing pleasure at meeting someone; - Asking someone`s nationality, college major; asking questions “What is it?”; - Asking about someone’s major, introducing your major; - Telling what you have or have not. Writing and reading skills - Reading and writing self-introduction.
  • Dormitory
    In this topic, students will learn: - how to ask and respond to questions; Where are you from? how to say the names of different countries and their capital cities; how to explain which capital city belongs to which country.
  • Family
    Vocabulary - Family - numerals Speaking skills - Describing your family, asking questions about someone’s family, their occupation - Telling your age, asking someone’s age; - Asking question “Who is it?”; Writing and reading skills - Describing of someone’s family;
  • Neighborhood
    Speaking skills - Asking about dates of national holidays, date of birthday, etc.

    Vocabulary - Daily routines - Plans for the weekend - Week days - Frequency adverbs Speaking skills - Talking about daily activities - Asking people how they spend the weekend, about their daily routines - Telling and asking about schedule Writing and reading - Reading and write about schedule and daily routines
  • To the college
    Vocabulary - Types of colleges in Russia and Indonesian/Malaya, college life (holidays, classes schedule, etc.).
  • College life
    Telling about past activities - Asking and telling about college life Writing and reading skills - Writing and reading about your college
  • Visiting friend’s house
    Vocabulary - Daily routines - Plans for the weekend - Week days - Frequency adverbs Speaking skills - Talking about daily activities - Asking people how they spend the weekend, about their daily routines - Telling and asking about schedule Writing and reading - Reading and write about schedule and daily routines
  • Restaurant

  • Hobby
    learn how to describe and respond to questions about their hobby and future plans; - learn how to talk about jobs; including the plans for future work.
  • Club
    Vocabulary - Clothes - Colors - Physical appearance, character-related lexis Speaking - Describe one's preferences in clothes - Describe one's appearance and character - Ask about someone's appearance and character Writing Reading skills - Reading and writing about someone's appearance and character
  • Appointment
    learn how to express time: the time, years, month and dates. Basic vocabulary—means of transportation; directions; taxi language; -Sentence patterns—asking ways; communicating with taxi drivers (drive slowly, drive fast, turn left/right, stop, etc.)
  • At the cafe
    In this topic, students will: -learn how to communicate with a shop keeper to purchase an item; - learn how to count different items, using appropriate 'measure words' and how to bargain the price down when shopping in a market.
  • Bank
    learn bargaining skills to negotiate the price of an item at a market; - understand that the cost of certain products is different abroad and Russia.
  • Revision
    Review of the course material (vocabulary, grammar)
