Аннотация

This course is an introduction to key philosophical ideas and debates on language, knowledge, and culture. Ernst Cassirer's analysis of philosophical theories of language, his approach to the conceptual and cultural dimensions of language will serve as a basis for practising close reading and critical discussion.

  • Students should practise close reading of philosophical texts, master basic philosophical terminology, and understand the structure of arguments.

  • Know basic vocabulary and the main ideas of the neo-Kantian approach to knowledge and culture
  • Know the main debates and theses on language, its nature, and origin across the history of philosophy.
  • Understand and analyse the symbolic nature of culture, and especially of language and its expressive power.
  • Understand the symbolic nature of knowledge and compare it with the symbolic cultural system of language.
  • Be familiar with some of the main areas of research in contemporary philosophy

    Neo-Kantianism and the critical method in philosophy. Knowledge and the formation of concepts. Culture and symbolic forms.
  • Language in the history of philosophy
    Philosophical theories of language. Idealism; empiricism. Enlightenment. Origin of language. Development of linguistics
  • Language and expression
    Mimetic, analogical, and symbolic expression. Space, time, and number. Formation of subjective consciousness in linguistic expression
  • Language and concept
    Concept and class formation. Forms and concepts of relation.
  • General Introduction to Philosophy
    Online introduction to contemporary philosophy: Epistemology, Philosophy of science, Philosophy of Mind, Political Philosophy, Moral Philosophy, Metaphysics
