Course Syllabus

Abstract

The program is aimed at the academic stuff teaching the course “German language” and ICEF students, who learn German as the first foreign / european language at an advanced level (III-IV study years). The stages vary by the difficulty of materials (from the easiest to the most difficult) and by balance of general German (dominated the first round) and professional language for specific purposes (more common at the advanced level). Both rounds rely on the achievement of final program requirements.

  • Student must be able to summarize and comment the content of business correspondence and synthesize various secondary texts
  • Students must be able to work with language material using academic (educational) literature.
  • Students must know peculiarities of sociocultural patterns of verbal and non-verbal behavior in both foreign language and mother tongue, understand the degree of their compatibility / incompatibility.

  • Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
  • Can complete basic transactions at a hotel, including checking in and checking out.
  • Can deal with relatively complex awkward situations that arise in social and business contexts.
  • Can describe an accident or injury, get medical help from a doctor and fill a prescription for medicine.
  • Can describe current weather conditions and suggest activities according to the weather forecast.
  • Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
  • Can describe the location of his home and give simple directions.
  • Can describe your past life, giving details about important milestones.
  • Can discuss clothing and what kind of clothes you like to wear.
  • Can discuss clothing at a basic level and ask sales clerks simple questions about it.
  • Can discuss common products, make basic purchases and return faulty items.
  • Can discuss leadership qualities and talk about leaders whom you admire.
  • Can discuss your vacation plans and tell friends and colleagues about your vacation afterwards.
  • Can engage in basic communication at work, including attending meetings on familiar topics.
  • Can explain your education, experience, strengths and weaknesses, and discuss your career path.
  • Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
  • Can interact with other people in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
  • Can participate in meetings in your area of expertise, if you have help understanding some points.
  • Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

  • Can talk about favorite foods and make simple orders for take-out food.

  • Can talk about the natural world and travels to see animals and natural areas in your country.
  • Can talk about what you like to read and make recommendations about good things to read.
  • Can talk about your personal finances and give advice to friends and colleagues about their finances.
  • Can talk in general terms about his health and describe common medical symptoms to a doctor.
  • Can talk simply about family and colleagues, describing their appearance and personalities.
  • Can tell where he and others are from and give a basic description of his city.
  • Can understand and make basic business proposals in your area of expertise.
  • Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
  • Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
  • Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization.
  • Can use appropriate language in social situations, including praising and expressing sympathy.

During the exam, it is prohibited: to turn off the camera, to use notes and tips. A short-term communication failure during the exam is considered a communication failure for less than two minutes. Long-term communication disruption during the exam is considered two minutes or more. In case of a long-term communication disruption, the student cannot continue to participate in the exam.
