Abstract

The aim of the course of Theoretical Grammar of the English Language is to present a theoretical description of its grammatical system, i.e. to scientifically analyze and define its grammatical categories and study the mechanisms of grammatical formation of utterances out of words in the process of speech making. The course “Stylistics” is aimed to develop awareness of the system of expressive resources and stylistic devices of the English language in line with the effects achieved. Students develop their text skills viewing the text as a unity of semantic, functional, structural and stylistic elements. Within the format of the course, linguistic and style-forming characteristics of texts belonging to different functional styles are analyzed. Acquired theoretical knowledge and practical skills should be applied in the process of writing the graduation paper.

Learning Objectives

Present an introduction to the problems of up-to-date linguistic study of English on a systemic basis
Give the students a grounding of basic theories, methodology and scientific approaches to the problems of theoretical aspects of English Grammar
Teach the students to analize speech phenomena and find successful solution of the problems
Train the students for skill-based communication. end of the course “Theoretical Grammar”, students get an idea of Theoretical Grammence, language as a system, grammatical structure of the English language, grammaories, morphology and syntax
to help students form an integrated view of the system of expressive resources of the language, their mechanisms and functions in different kinds of texts
to lay theoretic foundations for conducting research in linguostylistcs through teaching specialist terminology and familiarizing students with the most relevant research methods
to develop text interpretation skills based on the pragmatic functions of the text
to teach students to differentiate stylistically coloured units with regard to their appropriateness

Section 1. Language as a System
Language in Relation to speech. Three Main Constituent Parts of Language. Grammar: Different Approaches (Prescriptive\ Descriptive\ Semantico-communicative). The General Idea of a System. System. Subsystem. Supersystem. The Plane of Content and the Plane of Expression. Synchrony and Diachrony. Syntagmatic and Paradigmatic Relations. Units of Language. Units of Language. The segmental units of language form a hierarchy of levels: phonemic, morphemic, lexemic, phrasemic, denotemic, proposemic and dictemic.
Section 2. Morphology
Traditional (Functional) Classification of Morphemes. Allo-emic Theory of Descriptive Linguistics. Distribution of a Unit. Distributional Classification of Morphemes. The Notion of Grammatical Form and Grammatical Category. Analytical and Synthetical Grammatical Means. Immanent and Reflective Grammatical Categories. Opposition Types in the Language System, their Structure and Function. Oppositional Neutralization and Oppositional Transposition. The Problem of Parts of Speech. The Criteria of Identification of Parts of Speech. Parts of Speech in Traditional Linguistics. The Syntactico-distributional Classification of Words. Three-layer Classification of Parts of Speech. Lexical Paradigm of Nominalization. The Noun as the Central Nominative Lexemic Unit of Language. The Problem of the Category of Gender. The Category of Number and its Ability to Carry Quantitative Meaning. The Problem of the Category of Case. Different Approaches to the Category and their Analysis.

Paradigmatic Syntax. Sentence as the Principle Unit of Syntax. Valency of the Word. Kernel Sentence. Syntactic Derivation of Sentences. Syntactic Paradigm. Structural Types of the Sentence. Monopredication. Polypredication. Non-sentence Utterances. Types of Relation between the Components in the Simple Sentence. Communicative Type Classification of Sentences. Semantic Type Classification of Sentences. Actual Division of the Sentence. Linguistic Categories of the Theme and Rheme. Syntagmatic Connections of Words. Linear relations between units in a segmental sequence. Relations ‘in praesentia’. Types of Syntagmatic Connection. Three types: coordinate, subordinate and predicative. The Phrase. A nominative unit fulfilling the function of polynomination. The classification of phrases. The Composite Sentence, Its Structure and Derivation. The Compound Sentence. The Complex Sentence. The Semi-Composite Sentence. The Structure of the Text. The Categorical Aspects of the Text. The Informational Aspects of the Text.
Section 1. Object of Stylistics
Stylistics as a branch of linguistics, its goals and objectives
Section 2. The Notion of Expressiveness
Denotation and connotation of words. Evaluative and emotive components of connotative meaning.
Section 3. Stylistic Classification of the English Vocabulary
Formal, neutral and informal vocabulary.
Section 4. Expressive Resources and Stylistic Devices of the Language.
Phono-graphical devices, lexical devices, syntactical devices.
Section 5. Functional Stylistics
Fiction (the belles-lettres functional style) and non-fiction (the publicistic style, the media style, the academic style, the style of official documents)

Assessment Elements

Сlasswork
Classwork involves active class participation, extended responses, relevant comments, and valid contributions to conversations and discussions.
Portfolio
Exam
At the end of the course the students take an oral exam that consists of two parts: a theoretical question and a practical task – the analysis of the text. If the total grade for classwork and portfolio is 8, 9 or 10, the teacher can grant an exam pass without sitting the exam. Экзамен проводится в письменной форме (опрос по материалам курса). Экзамен проводится высылается на корпоративные почты студентов. Экзамен проводиться согласно расписанию, высланному преподавателем на корпоративные почты студентов накануне экзамена. Компьютер студента должен удовлетворять требованиям: наличие доступа в интернет, программы Microsoft Office. Для участия в экзамене студент обязан: поставить на аватар свою фотографию, явиться на экзамен согласно точному расписанию. Кратковременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается нарушение связи менее минуты. Долговременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается нарушением в 10 минут и более. При долговременном нарушении связи студент не может продолжить участие в экзамене. Процедура пересдачи идентична процедуре сдачи.

“Test” (max. 10 points) assesses the knowledge of terminology and the ability to recognize stylistic devices and identify functional styles and their basic characteristics.

Project
“Project” (max. 10 points) refers to individual research into a certain issue (nature and functions of stylistic devices).
Examination
The examination is conducted in the written form (max.10 points). It includes comparative analysis of texts belonging to different functional styles; assesses the ability to recognize stylistically coloured words and stylistic devices and their functions. The following parameters are assessed: stylistic appropriateness, accuracy and precision, coherence and cohesion.
