Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course is designed for students who are training for the following majors: linguistics, cultural studies, translation and interpreting, teaching methods. This course is aimed at providing guidance in preparation and delivery of speeches within frames of public context. It focuses on the realization of a number of tasks, such as: gaining the basic rhetoric expertise, mastering debates, presentations, interviews, speaking at conferences and making a video tutorial. On completion, students are supposed to be able to prepare and deliver well-organized speeches with appropriate audiovisual support, also demonstrate speaking, listening, and interpersonal skills necessary to become effective communicators in academic context or the workplace.

  • to explore the basics of rhetoric knowledge to study the principles and methods of selected forms of public speaking for various purposes, contexts and audiences to consider different presentation techniques, to plan and structure presentations to apply knowledge to classroom presentations and receive feedback on the style and impact in presenting to overcome anxiety, fear and nervousness when making a presentation .

  • determine communication purposes and adapt organization, language and other message characteristics
  • understand, implement and practice all steps of the speech-making process (identifying a topic, focusing on main points and evidence, using transitions etc)
  • utilize principles of effective listening as both speaker and audience
  • communicate effectively in accordance with a designated audience
  • evaluate source material, integrate material into speeches, and cite research properly
  • incorporate effective audiovisual materials in speeches when appropriate

  • Тема 1. Introduction. How to make a pitch
    benefits of a public speaking course; basic notions of public speaking; speech communication process; importance of feedback; skills of a successful presenter; controlling nervousness; reasons for stage fright; how to deal with nervousness; speech introducing yourself;
  • Тема 6. Explaining research to a general audience
    targeting a presentation; designing an informative speech; develop clarity through support and slides; building arguments; dealing with extraordinary situations when delivering a speech;
  • Тема 2. Persuasive Speech
    methods of persuasion: ethos, logos, pathos; supporting ideas with examples; supporting ideas with statistics and testimony; using language; using voice effectively; using body language and interacting with the audience;
  • Тема 3. Informative Speech
    public speaking in a multicultural world; speech outlines and possible arrangement models; developing and organizing an informative speech; organizing the body of the speech; beginning and ending the speech;
  • Тема 4. Product/design presentations
    presentation preparatory guide; construction plans for sales presentations; analyzing the audience; sales presentation structure;
  • Тема 5. How to make a video tutorial
    guidelines for informative speaking; using visual aids; analyzing the audience; how to make a video tutorial;

    Экзамен проводится в устной форме (опрос по материалам курса). Экзамен проводится на платформе Skype (https://www.skype.com/). К экзамену необходимо подключиться согласно расписанию ответов, высланному преподавателем на корпоративные почты студентов накануне экзамена. Компьютер студента должен удовлетворять требованиям: наличие рабочей камеры и микрофона, поддержка Skype. Для участия в экзамене студент обязан: поставить на аватар свою фотографию, явиться на экзамен согласно точному расписанию, при ответе включить камеру и микрофон. Во время экзамена студентам запрещено: выключать камеру, пользоваться конспектами и подсказками. Кратковременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается нарушение связи менее минуты. Долговременным нарушением связи во время экзамена считается нарушение минута и более. При долговременном нарушении связи студент не может продолжить участие в экзамене. Процедура пересдачи подразумевает использование усложненных заданий.
