Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course will select six most outstanding issues in contemporary Korean politics and will engage in an in-depth, interactive inquiry of those issue. They include Korean politics in history, institutional setting of Korean politics, and dynamics of political culture in Korea, profiles of political leadership, myth and reality of the developmental state and the Korean economic miracle, and debates on Korean unification. The course will expose students to contending theories and empirical reality at first hand.

  • Gains knowledge about South Korea’s constitutional foundation, its evolution and the structure and features of South Korean government.
  • Analyses different parties on reform of South Korea's political system.
  • Student can evaluate President Rhee Syngman, Park Chung-hee and Kim Dae-jung by using the criteria of political leadership.
  • Formulates the process of Korean political elite with focus on the candidates' education and social background.

Course Contents

  • Theme 3: Evolution of Political Institutions in South Korea
    The explanation of institution including its concept, types and major issues. Expounding South Korea’s constitutional foundation and its evolution with focus on its nine constitutional amendments. The structure and features of South Korean government, brief introduction of South Korea’s presidential system.
  • Theme 4: Current Debates on Reform of Political Institutions
    Suggestions of political parties on reform of political system.
  • Theme 5: Profiles of Political Leadership
    Political leadership - the definition, types and evaluation criteria. Evaluation of President Rhee Syngman, Park Chung-hee and Kim Dae-jung by using the specific criteria, discussion of the unique pattern of South Korean leadership.
  • Theme 6: Political Elite in Korea
    Enrollment of political elite in South Korea: education and social background.
  • Theme 1: Korean Politics in Historical Perspective
    An overview of Korean Politics which includes past history, the presidents and the main historical events during the 1st to the 6th Republic, and the democratic transition in 1987.
  • Theme 2: Dynamics of Democratic Transition in South Korea: Structure, Culture, and Leadership Choice
    Summarizing the four legacies of South Korea’s politics from 1948 to 1987 and introducing the major concepts and models of democratic transition. A clear and detailed explanation about South Korea’s democratic transition which includes the transition dynamics, the determinants of democratic transition and the democratic consolidation.
  • Summing-up
    Familiarization of students with marks for the course. Answers on questions.

    Debate missed by a student for a good reason (illness, scientific or academic trip, participation in a conference, etc., documented to the training office), as agreed with the teacher, may not be taken into account and the weight will be redistributed to all elements of the online course control.
