Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is designed for those interested in acquiring comprehensive knowledge and technical skills in examining the structure and dynamics of population change, its causes and consequences. Emphasis is placed on understanding of the interlinkages between population studies and health, including life expectancy, ageing, health inequalities etc. The curriculum includes advanced training in both the theories and modern methods of demographic and epidemiological analysis. The course will help students acquire expertise in collection, processing and interpretation of the demographic and epidemiological data. The course reveals the main patterns and characteristics of the epidemiological transition (mortality and morbidity trends) in Russia compared to the advanced countries.

• acquiring techniques of demographic and basic epidemiological analysis
• interpretation and critical understanding of demographic and epidemiological information

Expected Learning Outcomes

• demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of modern techniques to the study of demographic processes and population health
• formulate research questions and use demographic and health data, and appropriate methods of analysis, to address them
• generate evidence-based demographic and health policies tacking excessive mortality
• identify causes and consequences of population change and relate these to underlying demographic trends and patterns in Russia and abroad

• The concept of demography and epidemiology. Data sources on population and population health
• Population changes and demographic structures
• Fertility and reproductive health
• Health and mortality
• Population ageing and biodemography
• Principles of epidemiology. Epidemiological research design.
