Course Syllabus
Abstract
Within the framework of the course students get acquainted with the basic concepts of translation theory and general conceptual framework for the analysis and understanding of translation as a process and a product, as well as acquire basic skills translating various texts from one language to another and choosing the most appropriate translation tools.
Learning Objectives
- To form students' understanding of translation as a process and result in a linguistic, cultural, social and historical context, to give an idea of the technological component of modern translation, and the prospects for the development of this branch of human activity.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- The student is able to adequately translate various texts from a foreign language (SL English) into their native language (TL Russian)
- The student is able to adequately convey the meaning of SL texts in the TL, in accordance with the style and specifics of the original text, and in accordance with the style and specifics of the TL
- The student is able to identify mistakes and other flaws in the already existing translations and proofread those
- The student is able to master a new program, new data processing method, or a new corpus; apply the data available in the instructions and descriptions to the solution of the task presented
- The student is able to apply the acquired knowledge in the context of the modern inter- disciplinary scientific paradigm.

Assessment Elements
- In-class participationIn-class participation
- HomeworkHomework assignments in the 1st module include: analysis of various translations of the same texts (figuring out translator’s strategy, technique etc.); short presentations on the topics related to the history of translation. Final midterm assignment: select a published translation and analyze the techniques and strategies applied comparing it to the original SL text. Homework assignments in the 2nd module include translation of short (up to 200 words) texts of various types.
- Completed translationFinal Course Assignment: annotated translation of a special purpose text, related to the student’s graduated assignment (at least 2000 words).
