Course Syllabus
Abstract
The purpose of this course is to form awareness and understanding of the lexical level of the English language system. Specifically, it considers the etymology and morphological structure of English words, the ways of vocabulary replenishment and types of semantic changes. The knowledge of stylistic properties of lexemes and idiomaticity of the English language will enable students to carry out research using the accepted terminology and meta language.
Learning Objectives
- to form the scientific understanding of lexical processes in the modern English language, to shape comprehension of differences and similarities between the lexical systems of the English and the Russian languages
Expected Learning Outcomes
- ability to analyse the types of assimilation of borrowings , to distinguish betweennative and loan words
- able to classify morphemes, to analyze the morphemic structure of Englishe lexems, to establish means of word formation
- able to distinguish polysemouse and homonymous words, analyse differences between types of antonyms, classify synonyms
- able to analyze the semantic structure of lexemes, trace the changes of word meanings
- able to classify the words according to their register, to distinguish between curren, obsolete words and neologisms
- able to differenciate betweenPU and free phrases, classify PU according to their semantic unity, register and structure
