Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course consists of two parts: Introduction to Neuroimaging: Theory and Lab Practice The course will outline and compare different optical microscopy techniques and super-resolution imaging in neuroscience.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • The course aims to teach students to understand basic principles of the current optical imaging techniques, microscope design, and image formation. The course will also offer laboratory practice in sample preparation, confocal imaging, and image analysis. Students will learn how to choose the most appropriate imaging method for their own research project. Topics also include clearing agents and techniques, optical imaging of brain activity in vivo, super-resolution imaging techniques, and applications for functional analyses of neuronal circuits.
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of geometric optics and optical image formation for the effective use of various microscopes.
  • Know the principles of optical microscopy, including super-resolution microscopy, know and understand its application in neuroscience.
  • Be able to present and discuss experimental data.
  • Describe the application limitation of fluorescence microscopy, as well as specialized techniques such as FRET and FRAP, light-sheet microscopy.
  • Understand how to set up and operate various types of microscopes to obtain high-quality images.
  • Perform sample preparation for optical microscopy.
  • Analyze and interpret microscopic images obtained using light sheet, confocal, and light microscopes for scientific research.
