Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is concerned with the ways in which political practice is bound up with geographical definition: with spatially defined conceptions of inside and outside, center and margin, core and periphery systems regulated by international law and governed by such concepts as sovereignty and national self-determination. Fundamental to the course is a geographical and historical background of the state and relations between states examined through the prism of such concepts as space and power and territoriality in in contemporary political geography. The course includes traditional and modern geopolitics, engaging with the key ideas in the geopolitical tradition and he current dynamics of international relations.

  • To understand the development of group identities such as nations and examine the linkages between these identities and the political organization of territory,
  • To engage with the process of state-building and historical development of statehood by looking at the cases of particular nations and their transformation throughout the history.
  • To evaluate the importance of geographic conditions in the emergence of states and formation of national identities by examining the key concepts and ideas in the study of political geography.
  • To have a familiarity with international and regional structures of the contemporary institutional framework and be able to explain the logic behind the political geography of alliances and integration.
  • To engage with the process of state-building and historical development of statehood by looking at the cases of particular nations and their transformation throughout the history.
  • To evaluate the importance of geographic conditions in the emergence of states and formation of national identities by examining the key concepts and ideas in the study of political geography.

  • To understand the origins of political systems and be able to draw on the examples of different regions to explain the diversity of world orders today
  • To develop the understanding of the main reasons and potential consequences of regional conflicts
  • To be able to apply geopolitical theory to analysing the phenomenon of failed states and its implications for the international politics
  • To develop a critical view on the process of globalisation by engaging with the contemporary challenges of the deepened interdependence and interconnectedness of the international arena
  • To be able to capture the changing nature of the global order and analyse possible implications of the process of globalisation for the relations between states and regions
  • To be able to interpret the origin and implications of local border disputes and draw on the example of both historical and contemporary instances of such conflict to better grasp the phenomenon of political instability
  • To be able to invoke the key concepts and ideas in the study of political geography when analysing the historical development of different states and regions
  • To develop profound knowledge about the development of global affairs in the age of globalisation and apply the main concepts of political geography to assess the politics of integration in the international arena
  • To develop the factual understanding of the key political events and developments in the history of international relations
  • To engage with the examples of successful cases of political alliances and integration in order to understand the logic behind the increasing demand for deepened inter-state cooperation
  • To be able to evaluate the role of international organisations in shaping the contemporary international relations
  • To evaluate the phenomenon of territorial instability and the growing number of regional conflicts by interpreting the key conclusions of political geography and area studies
  • To understand the key motives behind regional integration and critically assess its impact on the increasingly globalised and interdependent world politics
  • To draw on the contemporary cases of geopolitical powers and develop the appreciation of the role of geopolitics in the international politics
  • To be able to evaluate the contemporary patterns of global and regional dynamics by looking at the history of geopolitical thought and employing traditional geopolitical concepts and ideas
  • To develop the factual understanding of the Cold War period, its political dynamics and and a profound impact on geopolitics and international relations
  • To be able to interpret the fundamental developments in the international arena in the post-Cold War era by invoking the main conclusions of geopolitical scholars of the Cold War era
  • To look at the critical tradition in the geopolitical thought and be able to critically analyse the main ideas and propositions of traditional geopolitics
  • To develop the understanding of the stages in the formation of the United Staes as a geopolitical actors and be able to evaluate its current position in the international arena
  • To engage with the historical transformation of Russia and its unique geographic conditions in order to assess the main priorities and political orientations of Russia as one of the key geopolitical actors

    Colonial institutions and their role in explaining modern stage in economic and political development of Latin America

    Medical certificate or any proof of academic activity (e.g. conference) should be handed in to the Administration Office if a student wants to make up for the missed opportunity to get credits. It is obligatory to notify the tutor or the assistants to ask for a special task for the related topic. The tutor should be notified by a student via e-mail during a student’s absence and a medical certificate (or any document explaining the valid reason) should be handed in not later than 2 days after a student has return to studying. Unless these steps are accomplished, a student will get the mark “0” for all seminars they missed.
