Course Syllabus
Abstract
The research seminar "Introduction to Experimental Linguistics" familiarizes students with methods and techniques in experimental approaches to language. The course places special emphasis on practical skills.
Learning Objectives
- The goal of the course is to introduce students to the basics of the experimental approach to language and a variety of experimental techniques employed in contemporary linguistics.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Students will understand the basic logic of the experimental design.
- Students will be familiar with various experimental methods
- Students will be able to set up a simple experimental design as well as analyze the data.
Course Contents
- Mental lexiconBehavioral tasks: word associations. Behavioral tasks: semantic relations and definitions
- Linguistic Relativity and Spatial RelationsExperiments used to test the Linguistic Relativity hypothesis. Behavioral tasks: space and object categorization
- Experimental syntax and sentence processingTesting grammaticality judgments. Eye tracking and Neuroimaging.
- Practical application of experimental skillsCollecting and Analyzing Data. Student Presentations.
Assessment Elements
- CourseworkPresentations and team projects.
- Term paperThe term paper is a revised and finalized version of a) the elaborated presentation b) team project c) individual research essay. It is 8-10 pg. long (Times New Roman, 12 pt., double-spaced).
