Course Syllabus
Abstract
Key Words on the Media is designed for bachelors in the Faculty of Communications, Media, and Design. The goal of the course is a practice-oriented study of modern English-language media through keywords and idiomatic expressions, translation from English into Russian of journalistic texts of various genres, as well as oral presentations (presentations, debates, colloquiums) on relevant socio-political topics using key vocabulary.
Learning Objectives
- To give students an advanced level of English proficiency a comparative approach to the study of English-language media in an expanded academic context.
- To acquaint students with the basics of English-language political vocabulary in the perspective of content analysis, discourse analysis and debate theory.
- Using the example of article translations, give an idea of the key to understanding terms in materials of various genres and topics.
- To instill communication skills in English, the ability to clearly and reasonably express your position using keywords.
- To form the ability of students to collaborate, debate, and tolerance; ability to socially adapt.
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Able to analyze articles in English.
- Able to debate in English.
- Able to write political texts in English.

- Self-presentation. Introduction to the course. The definition of mass media. Types of mass media. People in the media.
- Political vocabulary in the media. Political views, agenda, campaigns, debates.
- Business media. Finances and market.
- Work, unemployment and welfare.
- Crime and punishment.
- Diplomacy and war.
- Entertainment and the arts.
