Course Syllabus

Abstract

There are two interrelated blocks in the course. The first block covers different practical issuers that could be useful in professional sphere:  Academic writing skills  Writing annotation and review of research work  Writing an effective CV and cover letter  Making portfolio for entering MA programme  Writing application for research events  Business correspondence and business etiquette  Preparation for job interview  Self-organization and time-management  Stress management  Oral and visual presentations The second block includes meeting with our guests that could be interesting for students from the professional point of view:  Alumni of BA programme studying now at the MA programme in HSE and other Universities  HSE alumni working now in different spheres  Practitioners from different companies, research centers, organizations; Medias  Professors of the Department of Political Science Also we’ll discuss different possibilities for internship at 3d and 4th academic year and international student mobility

  • The course is aimed at improving skills and competencies required in professional sphere. Also it is aimed at elaboration different options of professional development after BA programme graduation (getting information about these options from different sources including communication with representatives of professional institutions)

    The main features of academic texts. References and citations. Preventing plagiarism. Paraphrasing, summarizing. Writing annotation and review
  • Oral and visual presentation
    Basic rules and tips on good oral presentation. Visual components of oral presentation. Working with different types of visual presentation
  • Preparation and submission of documents
    Writing CV and cover letter. Application for research events (conference, summer school, workshop etc.). Portfolio for MA programme
  • Business culture and business etiquette
    Basic rules of business etiquette. Job interview. Dress-code. Meeting protocol. Business correspondence
  • Self-organization skills
    Self-organization and time-management. Stress-management
  • Internship
    Possibilities for internship at HSE. Meeting with professionals
  • International student mobility
    Information on HSE programme. Other possibilities (experience of alumni)

Assessment Elements

  • non-blocking Student’s activities at class
    Each student is expected to attend all classes, participate in class discussions, group works and perform class assignments. Student’s involvement and contribution to the class discussions will be an object of assessment.   • non-blocking Homework assignment
    Each student has to perform a homework assignment – to find necessary information on the chosen topic and to represent it in the appropriate workshop. This assignment could be done in a small group (2-3 students). Each student has to cooperate with 3-4 group mates and perform a homework assignment on one of the main topics of the course program. They should find necessary information on the chosen topic and to represent it in the appropriate workshop in a form of Power Point presentation (around 15 min).
  • non-blocking Exam test in LMS
    The test includes main points and questions have been studied during the course. The exam test will last 120 minutes. It will be held at the end of Module 3.T his is a written test in LMS. It consists of different types assignments: - one-choice question - multiple-choice question - statements with missing words - connect statements from two columns

  • Interim assessment (3 module)
    The cumulative grade (GC) is calculated as an average, based on the following equation: GC = 0,7·Gsa + 0,3·Ghw, where Оsa – grade for students’ activities at class Оhw – grade for homework assignment The final grade (GF) is calculated as follows: GF = 0,7·GC + 0,3·GEX , where GC - the cumulative grade GEX – grade for the exam test
