Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course is an overview of international relations and political development in Asia that aims at familiarizing students with the main economic and political issues of the region. The introductory part of the course examines historical backgrounds of Asian countries (Middle East, Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, South Asia) with a focus on political and economic development during the post-Cold War period. The main part of the course introduces the contemporary development of Asia and is divided into two sections: security issues in Asia, cooperation and integration in Asia. Within the first section students will learn about conventional security issues, such as interstate conflicts and wars, territorial disputes and nu-clear proliferation, as well as new security threats: terrorism, globalization, forced migration, environ-mental degradation, etc. The second theme covers such topics as economic interdependence, international organizations and multilateral cooperation in Asia, bilateral relations of regional states, role of transnational organizations and external state actors.

  • The ultimate goal of the course is to provide students with the basic knowledge and understanding of the processes taking place in Asia and enable them to produce a fine academic research on a certain issue regarding the region. The practical academic skills trained through the seminars include literature search, text analysis and academic writing.

  • To know the main problems of political development and international relations of the region, its historical background and current state and trends of further development.
  • To be able to search, analyze and present information on various aspects of the foreign and domestic policies of the states, development of the region; to critically interpret the texts and formulate personal standing; to apply theoretical knowledge to conduct an academic study of specific phenomena and problems in Asia.
  • To have skills (gain experience) in the correct use of terminology and conceptual apparatus for understanding and writing texts on international relations and political science; to use knowledge in the practice of research work.

    The transformation of world political architecture after the end of the Cold War and the role of Asia in it. The legacy of the Cold War as a factor of instability in the region.     Студенты самостоятельно проходят тесты по онлайн-курсу (студенты восточноазиатского направления и студенты ближневосточного направления изучают один курс по тематике своего региона). И затем демонстрируют преподавателю свои баллы.

    Работа на семинарах представляет участие студентов в дискуссии и симуляциях на семинарских занятиях.
  • non-blocking Экзамен
    Итоговый контроль представляет собой письменный экзамен, состоящий из 20 тестовых вопросов разного формата: множественный выбор, заполнение пропуска, вопрос с открытым ответом. Время ответа – 60 минут. Предлагаемое задание содержит вопросы по терминологии и фактическому материалу. Основанием для снижения оценки являются: неполное раскрытие поставленного вопроса, ошибки и неточности в изложении фактов, некорректное использование/раскрытие терминов и понятий.
