Course Syllabus

Abstract

Title of the course: Contemporary Culture of Korea and China. This course is intended to understand social changes from the positions of diverse groups in contemporary Korea and China. The class will aim to provide an anthropological perspective on the lives of modern Koreans and Chinese against the structural systems of political systems and economic policies. Throughout the course, students will be familiarized with sociological and anthropological analyses of Korean and Chinese culture in a critical perspective. The course will also illuminate diverse perspectives of Korean and Chinese societies depending on a different region, gender, generation, class, and ethnicity.

  • This course is designed to provide students with the social and cultural background of Korea and China, and the indepth examination of social and economic issues in contemporary Korea and China.

  • Students will gain a comparative perspective on Korean and Chinese culture.
  • Students will be able to discuss the current issues such as family, gender, consumption, class, education, religion, urban space, and globalization in both Korean and Chinese societies.
