Abstract

Upwards of 25% of the human cortex is directly involved with processing visual input and even more is involved indirectly in helping to interpret that input. Since most these visual areas are coded in the same coordinate space as the retina, if we know where a person is looking we have an excellent representation of the visual information that is being coded in the brain. As we navigate and inspect the world around us, we make we make roughly three eye movement every second in order to bring the high resolution cells in the fovea to areas we wish to inspect. Recording and measuring eye movements in experimental or real world settings can provide information on a person’s visual input, attentional state, and other more cognitive functions. This course will explore current eye tracking technologies with a focus on video-based eye trackers (videooculography) but will also consider alternate techniques like (Electrooculography). Topics will include: a survey of current eye tracking solutions available and the advantages of disadvantages of each; experiment methodologies that are particular to eye tracking; a survey of observable eye data including saccades, microsaccades, pupilometry and smooth pursuit eye movements; and advanced techniques such as gaze contingent displays and combining eye tracking with EEG and TMS. The class will conclude with a series of practical sessions on how to implement experiments, collect, analyze and interpret data using high speed/resolution eye trackers available in the psychology department.
Learning Objectives

Learning Objectives

  • The oculomotor system review
  • Types of eye movement classifications
  • Electrooculography (video based eye trackers)
  • Other, less common eye tracking technologies
  • Tools and software for constructing eye tracking experiments
  • How to interpret eye movements
  • Fundamentals of vision theory
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Know the definition of saccades, microsaccades, and pursuit eye movements. When do they occur and what are the different properties
  • Understand the notion of saccadic triangulation with video plus corneal reflection system. Three dimension head plus eye transformations to 2-d gaze prediction.
  • How do we interpret gaze properties. What do eye movements tell us about attention, memory, and decision making. What are the limits of these interpretations
  • How does the timing of the eye tracker relate to timing of the experiment display. What are the temporal and spatial accuracies of leading eye trackers?
  • How do we control eye tracking in a real time experiment?
  • What is a gaze contingent paradigm, and how can we build it?
  • How do we interpret gaze properties. What do eye movements tell us about attention, memory, and decision making. What are the limits of these interpretations.
