Course Syllabus
Abstract
The following course is an introduction to topics in social cognition. The course discusses the history of social cognition and the main theories, currents issues and empirical research in social cognition. Research methods used in social cognition studies are also discussed.
Learning Objectives
- To introduce the approach and history of social cognition
- To introduce the theories and current issues in social cognition
- To develop the skills of analysis of empirical studies in social cognition
- To develop the skills of applying methods measuring different aspects of social cognition
Expected Learning Outcomes
- Students should have a profound knowledge of definition and key concepts of social cognition and its history.
- Students should have a profound knowledge of theories explaining the perceptual mind reading and cognitive understanding of others’ mind.
- Students should have a profound knowledge of implicit processes in social cognition and can use diverse methods of their measurement.
Course Contents
- Introduction to social cognitionDefinition of social cognition. Early understanding and modern understanding of social cognition.
- Perceptual mind-readingThe definition of mind reading. The brief history of mind-reading research. A split between perceptual mind reading and cognitive understanding of others’ mind. Perceptual mind-reading development and its abnormalities.
- Cognitive mind-readingThe definition of theory of mind. The history of theory of mind research. Abnormalities of theory of mind. How to measure the accuracy of understanding of other’s mind?
- AttitudesThe role of attitudes in social cognition. Investigating attitudes development, structure and change.
- Implicit social cognitionDefinition of implicit processes. Implicit theory of mind. Explicit and implicit methods of investigation of mind-reading. Methods of measuring implicit processes in social cognition.
