Course Syllabus

Abstract

The course is designed to provide students with foundational knowledge and skills in human resource management (HRM). The goal of this course is to expose the students to the purpose, main functions, policies, and practices of HRM in today’s organizations. The course is based on the HR wheel introduced by the Association for Talent Development (ATD, formerly American Society of Training and Development, USA), which includes the following main HRM functions: (a) Human resource planning, recruitment and selection, (d) training and development, (c) performance appraisal and feedback, (d) compensation, pay, and benefits, and (e) employee and labor relations. Students will also examine how managers at different levels (i.e., first-time managers, line managers, mid-level managers, top managers/executives) are involved in HRM and the expectations of organizational leadership to create and maintain the HRM function to enhance employee, group, and organizational performance. Students will also discuss innovations in HRM and future challenges for HRM in the global organizational context. The course combines lectures and interactive seminars to promote student critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The course assignments are based on current literature in HRM and include individual and group work.

    Contents: HRM definitions, role, strategies; HR department/function structure and purpose; internal and external forces affecting HRM; collaboration between HR function and organization’s management/leadership; strategic HRM.

  • Organizational behavior
    Motivation and motivation theories; knowledge, skills, and abilities; teams; leadership; organizational culture; employee individual differences.

    includes a variety of individual and group assignments given to complete at home. Homework will be checked in class during seminars. Homework is graded in accordance with the criteria provided below. Instructors might provide additional criteria for some assignments.

    The examination is conducted in writing using synchronous proctoring. The exam is conducted on the online HSE Moodle platform https://hse.student.examus.net. You must connect to the exam 15 minutes before the start. On the Examus platform, system testing is available. Student's computer must meet the requirements:2.2.1 A PC or a laptop (mobile devices are not supported). 2.2.2 Windows operating system (Windows 7,Windows 8,Windows 8.1,Windows 10) or Mas OS X Yosemite (version 10.10, or a newer version). 2.2.3 Google Chrome web browser in the latest version for the time of the examination (to install, please follow the link: https://www.google.com/chrome/ ; for latest updates, please see chrome://help/, the version installed on your computer will be indicated and available updates suggested); 2.2.4 Your network should be set up for the following ports: 80 TCP, 443 TCP, 3478 TCP/UDP (check this with your provider or open Control Panel – System and Security – Windows Defender Firewall – Additional Settings. Make sure there are no restrictions on incoming and outgoing connections). 2.2.5 Your computer (or laptop) must be equipped with a functioning external or built-in webcam. 2.2.6 You need to make sure that the microphone is functioning and has been switched on (including built-in microphones). 2.2.7 You should have a steady Internet connection with a speed of not slower than 5 Mbps; it is not recommended to use mobile Internet due to a high probability of disconnection. 2.2.8 Your computer should successfully pass the ‘Computer setup’ test. This test is available only after authorization. To participate in the exam, the student must: go to the proctoring platform in advance, conduct a system test, turn on the camera and microphone, and verify identity. During the exam, students are prohibited from: communicating (on social networks, with people in the room), writing off. During the exam, students are allowed to: use A4 sheets. A short-term communication disruption during the exam is considered interruption of communication up to 10 minutes. A long-term communication disorder during an exam is considered to be a communication interruption of 10 minutes or more. In case of a long-term communication disruption, the student cannot continue to participate in the exam. The transfer procedure is similar to the surrender procedure. 1.Rules: 1.2 Student is obliged to familiarise himself/herself with these Rules before the examination and observe them throughout the entire examination. 1.3 The examination is held using the Examus service in accordance with the examination period schedule schedule published on the website. 1.4 The examination is held 1 Hours 1.5 Student logs in to the system using corporate email address (****@edu.hse.ru). 1.6 Student agrees not to pass access details of his/her account in the Proctoring System to third parties. 1.7 Student is obliged to provide the necessary conditions for the operation of the Proctoring System: - an adequate light level - a low noise level - an identity document - no interference in transmission of video and audio signal 1.8 Student is obliged to use the original identity document for identification - passport. 1.9 Student agrees that the person whose document and photo were recorded in the Proctoring System at the first login is the owner of this account in the Proctoring System. 1.10 During the examination, the student shall: • not leave the webcam field of view • keep the microphone switched-on and not reduce its sensitivity level • use only one display device (a monitor, a TV, a projector), one keyboard, one pointing device (a computer mouse, TrackPoint, etc.) • follow the Proctor’s instructions • stay focused on the assignments (the computer screen or worksheets), not turning their eyes away in direction of other objects for a long period of time (15 secs and longer) 1.11 Student is not allowed to: • use assistance from third parties during the examina
