Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course introduces major concepts, theories, scholars, subfields, and research results of sociology, relating them to the realities of modern organizations. Students will learn what is “sociological imagination” and sociological analysis and how to apply sociological methods and ideas in the fields of sociology, management and organizational research. We will discuss major sociological paradigms: functionalism, constructivism and conflict paradigm. Students will learn sociological concepts, and also macro, middle, and micro-level sociological theories. Current situations, problems and trends in various social institutions such as education, business, mass media etc. will be discussed and analyzed. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed research methods are compared and their respective advantages and disadvantages are discussed. Different aspects of measurement and its applications in social sciences are discussed, including typical measurement errors, sampling strategies. Students will learn how to use different method of social research: classical and quasi experiment, observation, surveys, secondary data analysis, focus groups, desk research. Students will plan, perform and present sociological research projects in teams of 4-6 participants.

    Formula for final grade: 0,6 * reseach project + 0,1 activity + 0,2 test + 0,1 * final exam !!! Rounding procedure applies only for the final grade – grades for the other elements are not rounded. If the grade before averaging is integer plus .9, it will be rounded to the next integer. For example, 5.9 will be rounded to 6 points, but 7.8 will not be and final grade will be 7.
