Course Syllabus

Abstract

Architecture is one of the most complexly negotiated and globally recognized cultural practices, both as an academic subject and a professional career. Its production involves all of the technical, aesthetic, political, and economic issues at play within a given society. This course is aimed at delivering the basic understanding of both cultural and technical aspects of architectural thinking.

  • Familiarize students with different approaches to reading, analyzing and understanding different forms of architectural representation.
  • Discuss social and historical contexts behind major works of architecture.
  • Develop basic skills of producing one’s own architectural drawings and models.

  • Reconstruct the basic interconnections between theories and architectural practice;
  • Explain the main historical shifts in architecture through the lens of proposed theories;
  • Understand and explain the interdependencies between available building technologies and visual forms of architecture;
  • Successfully speculate upon contemporary building technologies and their impact on architectural forms;
  • Perform some of the basic architectural thinking skills;
  • Successfully speculate upon futuristic and fantastic architectural forms.

    ‒ Drawing Utopia: Visionary Architecture of the 18th Century. ‒ The Pompidou Center in the City of Paris ‒ Presenting the Unpresentable.

    Oral presentation presupposes mini-research project conducted individually by the student. The results are being presented during the class in front of the group. The presentation is followed by questions and remarks from the audience. TIme limits: 10 min for presentation, 5 min for questions.
