Course Syllabus
Abstract
This course provides overview of the supply chain planning processes and systems (Advanced Planning and Scheduling, APS), as well as in-depth examples on application of particular types of planning information systems at different levels of the supply chain planning hierarchy. The students have opportunity to gain hands-on experience for solving planning problems using APS, as well as to learn from case-studies of APS implementation worldwide

Course Contents
- The supply chain planning frameworkStructural and functional decomposition of a supply chain. Supply chain management and the planning levels. Key supply chain planning processes and their characteristics. The supply chain planning matrix. The hierarchical planning principle. Information flows supporting supply chain planning. Evolution of supply chain planning systems. Examples of integrated planning solutions. The types and the role of information technology for the supply chain management. Macro-processes in supply chain management: supplier relationships management, customer relationships management, internal operations management. Evolution of information technology for the supply chain management. Transactional and analytical systems. Advanced planning and scheduling systems.
- Information systems for strategic supply chain planningDecision-making framework for strategic supply chain planning in distribution and production. Application of mathematical programming models for supply chain network design. Information systems for supply chain network design. Case studies for strategic planning of supply chains. Limitations of mathematical programming approach for supply chain design. Multi-Echelon Inventory Optimization. Supply chain simulation.
- Information systems for tactical supply chain planningDecision making framework for tactical supply chain planning: demand management, capacity planning, inventory management. - Information systems for demand forecasting and planningThe role of demand forecasting and planning in supply chain management. The demand planning process. Forecasting hierarchy. Rolling horizon forecasting. Information systems for demand forecasting. Monitoring and controlling the demand forecasting process. Case studies for demand forecasting systems implementation.
- Information systems for operational planning and schedulingLinks between operational and tactical planning. Master scheduling. Distribution and inventory deployment planning. Available-to-promise. Plant scheduling. Transportation scheduling. Planing KPIs. Overview of methods for operational planning. Information systems for operational planning. Case studies for operational planning systems implementation.
Assessment Elements
- ParticipationThe points for participation can be earned by submitting the assignments, by participating discussions during classes, by doing in-class assignments. The grade is computed by dividing the sum of points for participation obtained by the student divided by the total points for all assignments posted and multiplied by 10. The result is posted into the gradebook without rounding.
