Course Syllabus

Abstract

This course will introduce an interdisciplinary approach to working with the key concepts and methods for the study of media, communication and information in international setting. This is a course addressing the major theoretical issues of, approaches to, and applications of communication studies scholarship, with a specific focus on theories of mass media.

  • To familiarise students with the main theories of media effects and communication.
  • To form the theoretical understanding of central issues of media system and its influence on policy (including foreign policy)
  • To form the general understanding of the media as a soft power in international context.
  • To provide practical and methodological skills to analyze global media outlets and their strategies.
  • To create an understanding of the essence of communication theory as a practical and research discipline;
  • To learn and apply modern tools and techniques in communication research
  • To get familiar with major theories is communication field, including theories of micro-, meta- and macro level

Course Contents

  • Introducing theory of media and communication
    First aim of this class is to familiarise the students with the class schedule and some basic rules. Further, the lecture covers main concepts necessary to study communication and media theory, introducing basic models of communication, Craig’s typology of communication theories and providing the first look at the evolution of media effects theory and research.
  • Into the newsroom: theories of agenda-setting and framing
    The topic focuses on the key theories of media effects: framing and agenda setting.
  • Cultivation theory and the mean world syndrome
    The lecture discusses one of the most interesting and influential theories of media effects - cultivation theory. Students will learn all about the power of TV, conducted empirical studies and relevant research approaches to measure the power of television.
  • Technological determinism VS Uses and Gratifications
    The lecture discusses two polar approaches in media and communication approach. The first, technological determinism originates in the work of Marshall McLuchan and his theory of Media Ecology, considers media as a defining tool for a major societal change. Uses & grats, on the contrary, have been developed comparatively recently and propose a radical assumption of changing the role the audience play.
  • Media as a tool of soft power and propaganda
    The lecture discusses the role of media at international level, brings up the historical cases and theoretical approach of the media as a soft power.
  • Theorising about social media and networked society
    The lecture discusses the broad scope of issues that go along with the widespread use of the Internet and the social media. Topics covered are: partisan journalism, social movements, public participation, populism, troll factories, hacked elections, #MeToo movement, twiplomacy and their implications across the globe. The seminar is structured around an article discussion. Students are encouraged to bring to the class alternative examples of the social media influences in IR.
  • Media in the international context: on intercultural differences
    Class is held to discuss intercultural aspect of media management and journalism

    Comparative study of international media: Al Jazeera, RT & CCTV The class breaks into 3 groups and each group is preparing a presentation on one of the international channels in the topic of covering US Presidential elections 2020. The aim of the task is to assess critically the content produced in accordance with the domestic and foreign politics of the country. Timing: 17 min for presentation + 5 min for Q&A What should be in the presentation: Institutional analysis: a brief overview of the media, history, coverage, audience, etc. Message system analysis: the positioning of the media on the topic of US Presidential elections (framing) Your checklist would be: Number of search results Key characters mentioned (sources of info) Key words: appear in title, repeated in text Flash words: more visible for textual or cultural reasons Metaphors/attitudes Grounds: people/events blamed to be the reason of happening events Actions: how actions are defined Pictures and illustrations supporting the text the evidence that supports the positioning statement: screenshots, quotes, frequency of the coverage the official positioning of the state in accordance with the given topic (with references to official documents) conclusion For some inspiration and guidance on method please see: Hutchings, S., Gillespie, M., Yablokov, I., Lvov, I., & Voss, A.
