Abstract

Modelling of intercultural dialogue The course is intended to provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills required for building dialogue among people with different cultural backgrounds in the global context of diversity. Students will be able to recognize prejudgments and prejudices as well as identify their roots and origins. The focus is on intercultural diversity management skills and critical thinking. Simultaneously with the main course, an online course is studied.

  • The purpose of the discipline is the formation of students' competencies in building, modelling, monitoring and regulating intercultural dialogue with their ability and willingness to take corrective actions based on their knowledge and skills in the spheres of cultural differences, principles of cultural dialogue, factors and conditions of intercultural dialogue efficiency, intercultural ethics, sensitivity, trust, empathy, and tolerance.

  • students get a comprehensive understanding of the diversity concept, obtain thorough knowledge of cultural differences, get practical skills of handling diversity in intercultural communication
  • Students acquire a multiple approach to conceptualizing the "dialogue" phenomenon, get a profound understanding of the “dialogicality” phenomenon, obtain the skills of analyzing the intercultural dialogue particularities.
  • Students obtain specific knowledge of the intercultural dialogue types and models, develop practical skills of detecting and analyzing prerequisites and outcomes of the intercultural dialogue, acquire a comprehensive understanding of the intercultural dialogue means with corresponding practical abilities to apply them with due consideration of the context.
  • Students obtain knowledge and skills of the intercultural dialogue facilitation and capacity-building.
  • Students acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills in tolerance, toleration, tolerant thinking and behaviour.
  • Students acquire theoretical knowledge and practical skills in applied ethics, ethical thinking and ethical behaviour while modelling the intercultural dialogue.

  • Cultural diversity as a global factor of communication
    The concept of “diversity”. Evolution of “diversity” recognizing a broad range of differences among people. Types of diversity. Traditional and inclusive models of diversity. Traditional model of diversity in the work activities, professional and business settings (race, gender, age, disability, lifestyle, pay level). Inclusive model of diversity in the work activities, professional and business settings (race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, lifestyle, pay level, function, competency, income, parent, language, work style, position, military experience, personality). Challenges and benefits of diversity. Diversity factor in person-to-person communication. The specifics of diverse communities, professional groups, workforce, etc. Handling diversity in communication. Diversity and inclusion. Managing diversity in professional spheres and business settings.
  • Intercultural dialogue as a social and cultural phenomenon
    The concept of “dialogue”. Communication vs Conversation vs Dialogue. Foundational perspectives of conversation. Relation of conversation to social creativity and the evolution of human consciousness. Dialogue from philosophical, historical, cultural, spiritual, social, ideological, political perspectives. Bohm, Buber, Bakhtin about the “dialogue” and “dialogicality” phenomena. Dialogue in the global community. The culture of dialogue and the dialogue of cultures. The concept of “intercultural dialogue”. Intercultural dialogue vs polylogue. The ontology of dialogue. The dialogue of cultures and civilizations in multicultural countries (Russia, the USA, Great Britain).
  • Types and models of the intercultural dialogue
    Modalities of conversation within the intercultural dialogue. The application of a design conversation within and across various types of design settings and human experiences. Types of the intercultural dialogue: interethnic, interracial, inter-national, inter-confessional, small-border, reconciliatory, utilitarian, etc. The ideological paradigm of the intercultural dialogue. Models of the intercultural dialogue. Prerequisites and outcomes of the intercultural dialogue. Sources and means of the intercultural dialogue. Arts, digital art, photography, cinematography, drama, mass media, social media, literature, urban spaces, events as means of the intercultural dialogue. Multimodality in creating meaning.
  • Capacity-building for engaging in the intercultural dialogue
    Intercultural dialogue facilitation and facilitators. Identifying the complex attitudes, opinions, and issues that people involve in communication, including prejudice, discrimination, stereotypes, and ethnocentrism. The importance of fostering a sense of inclusion. Factors affecting success and failure in intercultural dialogue. Symmetry and asymmetry of communication in the intercultural dialogue context. Gender factor and women’s opportunities. Principles of mediation in the intercultural dialogue. Intercultural dialogue mediated by information and communication technologies. Intercultural negotiators’ competences.
  • Tolerance as the basic principle in the intercultural dialogue modelling
    Conceptualizing tolerance. Tolerant thinking and tolerant behaviour. Developing tolerance. Social and cultural tolerance. Tolerance vs Patience. Tolerance vs Positive Discrimination. Tolerance vs Toleration. Toleration in conflict. Uses and misuses of tolerance in the intercultural dialogue modelling. Political implications of various conceptions of tolerance.
