Abstract

Civil society had its revival both as concept and as sphere of collective activity during the transformative processes in the societies of the former Soviet Union at the end of the 1980s and the beginning 1990s. Since then it civil society has become one of the most sought-after, wanted and at the same time most contested social phenomena in contemporary Russia. The actors of civil society in Russia in the past and today do not only appear during oppositional political events, but in the contrary, are often strongly related and enmeshed with the Russian welfare state, with caring for marginalized and underprivileged groups of the population, and with representing the interests of a vast variety of social groups. This course will introduce into the modern history and manifold forms of the term and actors of civil society in Russia. Using empirical examples, general theoretical concepts will be discussed. Using theoretical approaches, students will study particular forms of civil society in Russia. The aim of the course is to enable students to identify and understand civil society activities in Russia. Furthermore, students will be able to put civil society into the context of general social development and relate it to other general institutions, structures and actor groups in Russian society. We require from students active participation in class room discussions. Students will undertake small individual empirical research projects, whose results pose the basis for a class presentation and a final written essay.
