Course Syllabus

Abstract

This in an introductory course to the nonprofit management specifics. While by the fourth year students have already learnt quite a significant amount of management theory and practical skills, they have had very few encounters with the world of nonprofit organizations. Meanwhile the third sector has been growing in Russia and is playing an important role in the economies of other countries. The course will allow them to practice their skills in the new context. Since the millennium generation is especially interested in the meaningful work and creating common good, it is very important for them to understand how the sector works, what the underlying concepts are and how it is different from the world of business. The course will familiarize the students with major theories, realities and practices of nonprofit organizations. It will also allow them to make softer transitions between the sectors alongside their career paths.

Course Contents

Course Contents

  • Part 1. Understanding the nonprofit sector
    1. Intro to the course and the nonprofit sector. Students will learn the major course objectives, tasks, projects and grading system. They will also discuss some introductory information about the nonprofit sector, civil society and social entrepreneurship. 2. Theoretical concepts and foundations of the nonprofit sector and civil society functions. Students will gain understanding of the variety, different missions and functions of the nonprofit organizations, look at NGOs as innovators. Students will understand why and what for the nonprofit organizations exist, how they serve the communities and the world. 3. Historical overview of the nonprofit world: cultural context in Russia and worldwide. Legal aspects of nonprofit operations in Russia and abroad.
  • Part 2. Managing a nonprofit organization: special features and differences from for-profit organizations
    1. Nonprofit mission and vision. Students will overview the importance and foundational issues of nonprofit strategic planning. 2. Accumulating and managing resources. Students will learn about the variety of funding and resource accumulation methods. They will be able to identify and choose from grant seeking strategies, government contracting, entrepreneurial strategies, membership, partnerships, and social entrepreneurship. 3. Managing people in nonprofits. Students will realize the diversity of types of people’s engagement in nonprofit organizations. They will learn motivations of volunteers, employees, and members. They will also be introduced to some common ways of dealing with the difficulties and issues in managing those various relationships. 4. Effectiveness and efficiency in nonprofit organizations. Identifying effectiveness and efficiency and nonprofit organizations considerably differ from for-profit organizations. Students will learn some methods of measuring them, as well as realize the connections with the financial sustainability. 5. Accountability, transparency and ethics. Students will understand the major issues related to accountability and ethics in the nonprofit organizations, discuss the importance and methods of keeping a high level of organizational transparency and ethics.
  • Part 3. Project
    1. Setting the stage for a project. Introduction of organizations and their problems/projects. Setting the rules and expectations. Identifying the teams. 2. Presenting the cases in progress in class, brainstorming and consultations. 3. Presentations of the projects and feedback.

  • non-blocking Test
    The test will be based entirely on the content of the lectures of the second part of the course. The question types will be multiple choice, fill in the gap, matching, other types of closed questions
  • non-blocking Individual short reflection paper
    Will be based on theory and learning experiences of students. 700-1000 words .
  • non-blocking Short group presentation
    Such a presentation will have a specific focus and guidelines, will allow for a deeper understanding of a range of questions. Length of presentation – 10 minutes.
  • non-blocking Group project
    Will be based on real requests from nonprofit organizations and will reflect some aspects of the course. Groups will be able to choose an aspect they are most interested in.
  • blocking Individual written exam
    Will be based on the learning experiences of students during both the theoretical and project parts of the course
