Course Syllabus

Abstract

Enterprise architecture can be understood as a set of specialized documents and associated techniques for planning information systems and improving business and IT alignment in organizations. Enterprise architecture is necessary for managing the evolution of extensive IT landscapes of large organizations in a way aligned with their business goals and strategies. This course provides an overall introduction to enterprise architecture, discusses core concepts relevant to the subject and covers in detail several popular types of enterprise architecture artifacts.

  • Introduction to Enterprise Architecture
    The critical importance of IT for modern business. Modern organizations as complex socio-technical systems of business and IT. The problem of achieving business and IT alignment. The concept of enterprise architecture as a potential solution to the problem of business and IT alignment.
  • The Concept of Enterprise Architecture
    The concept of enterprise architecture. The practice of using enterprise architecture for improving business and IT alignment. EA artifacts as fundamental components of enterprise architecture and their essential properties. The role of architects in EA practices. The place of architecture functions in organizations.
  • Enterprise Architecture and City Planning
    The similarity between organizations and cities from the perspective of their planning. Six general types of EA artifacts and city planning documents as well as their type-specific roles in the context of EA and city planning practices. The relationship and complementarity between different types of EA artifacts and city planning documents.
  • Processes of Enterprise Architecture Practice
    Three core processes constituting an EA practice and their meaning in the organizational context. The relationship and information exchange between these processes enabling their coordination and synergy. A comprehensive high-level process view of an EA practice.
