Abstract

BRICS nations have been developing as one the most influential alliances in terms of contribution to the world’s economy, foreign markets expansion, or enhanced liaisons with other emerging economies. How do these countries do that? What challenges do they face? What countries might join the quintet in the future (if any)? These and other essential topics are in focus of the course. The course will give opportunity to get acquainted with insights, problems, dynamics and trends of BRICS, to discuss challenges for traditional world economic architecture and the role of BRICS on international scene.

Learning Objectives

The main goal of the course is to increase students' critical thinking competency, to develop advanced competency in fundamental understanding and evaluating the current and perspective situation of BRICS — a relatively new player in the arena of world economy and international business.

Expected Learning Outcomes

Student is capable of retrieving, collecting, processing and analyzing information relevant for achieving goals in the professional field.
Student is capable of posing research problems relevant to the study of political phenomena and political processes; setting particular research tasks; and putting together a research design
Student is capable of reporting the results of the information retrieval and analysis, academic or applied research she/he has conducted: - in various genres (including reviews, policy papers, reports and publications pertaining to socio-political subject matter); - and depending on the target audience
Student is able to think critically and interpret the experience (personal and of other persons), relate to professional and social activities

Course Contents

History of BRICS development and the architecture of World Economy
BRICS as a facilitator of cooperation between country-members: results and perspectives
BRICS and other initiatives, including 'One Belt and One Road'
Economic development of BRICS countries
Cross-cultural communication issues
Current status of cooperation, trends and challenges of BRICS country-members

Assessment Elements

In-Class Activity
In-class activities involve a blend of different experiences to illustrate key points of the course. The course includes both team-based and individual assignments.
Test
The Test will be conducted in the written form - multiple-choice test. The Test questions are based on the lectures’ and seminars’ material available to students through the LMS. It includes 20 questions with 4 possible answers.
Course Project
This is a team-based activity. The final presentation of the team project results is scheduled during the last seminar of the course.
Final Test
The Final Test is administered at the end of the second module. It will be conducted in the written form - multiple-choice test. The Final Test is based upon the lectures’ and seminars’ material. It includes 40 questions with 4 possible answers. The duration of the Final Test is 40 minutes. Students whose accumulated intermediate assessment is 8 – 10 points for three assessment elements (0.25 * In-Class Activity + 0.25 * Test + 0.25 * Team Project) are not required to pass the Final Test. In this case, the accumulated grade (O accum.) could be counted as the final grade (O final) upon the student’s decision.
