Course Syllabus

Abstract

“English Literature from Laurence Sterne to Virginia Woolf” is an elective course for students of literary studies. The course is organized chronologically around the major themes of English literature. It introduces works of English and American literature that are the core of the literary canon and the English academic discourse. Assessment for the course is based upon class participation an oral presentation, an essay, and a final oral examination. The course includes elements of “writing in the discipline”, the work on the essay is important as a process not just product.

  • A journey in the context of the 18th century travel literature. Style and sensibility: history of literature in the context of history of ideas and history of emotions.
  • The poetry of British Romanticism and Pre-Romanticism. Poetry and visual arts. Poetry and visionarism. Poetic image and poetic symbolism. ”. Romantic ode as a genre. The formal aspect of poetry; phonics, meter, stanza.
  • The Two Pillars of American Poetry
  • Poetry of the 20th Century.
  • An Overview of History of British and American Literature, from 18th to 20th Century
  • Victorian Prose
