Course Syllabus

Abstract

Introduction to Linguistics is a basic course laying the foundation of linguist' professional expertise. The discipline aims to raise students' awareness of what linguistics is, what and how it studies. It prepares students for further in-depth study of other related subjects. The discipline gives the basic knowledge of such issues as the origin of language, its structure, functioning in the society, correlation of lingual and mental processes, interdependence of language and culture, etc. The discipline familiarizes students with universal properties of human language and linguistic diversity.

  • The discipline familiarizes students with the object, aims, and methods of general and special linguistics and prepares them for further in-depth study of language-related issues.
  • The discipline gives an idea of general principles of language evolution, structure, and functioning.
  • The discipline develops the students' knowledge of such issues as the linguistic sign, language structure, correlation of lingual and mental processes, language and speech, the structure of language, types of language units, systems of writing, linguistic diversity, etc.
  • The discipline develops the students' awareness of language functioning in the society, correlation of linguistic and extralinguistic (historical, cultural, etc.) factors.
Expected Learning Outcomes

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • Students should have an idea of grammatical category, grammatical form, and grammatical meaning. Students should know the properties of morphemes, word groups, and sentences as well as particularities of their functioning.
  • Students should know genealogical and typological classification of languages.
  • Students should know particularities of language functioning in the society, types of linguistic situations, social typology of languages.
  • Students should know textual categories, text types, the history of writing, systems of writing.
  • Students should know the properties of language as a sign system, functions of language, correlation of language and mentality, language and speech, language structure, theories of the origin of language.
  • Students should know the properties of units of the phonemic level, their speech realization, as well as principles of suprasegmental phonetics.
  • Students should know the properties of word as the main language unit, types of word groupings, types of semantic change.

Assessment Elements

    The teacher determines the way of the control, either encouraging students eager to answer or keeping to random choice of students for the answer. Students' activity and creativity should be taken into consideration.

    The teacher determines the number of content of tests. As a rule, they finalize the study of a section of the course.

  • non-blocking online course
    Students study the course and inform the teacher of the results by sending a screenshot.
  • non-blocking Examination
    The student's answer includes 2 theoretical issues, 40% each, and a practical task making 20%.
